I really enjoyed The Girl Before so eagerly awaited Delaney’s second novel, Believe Me, which the author (Tony Strong, writing as JP Delaney) notes is a re-work and re-publication of a manuscript published 17 years earlier. She’s an actress but a student of the Constantin Stanislavski method which suggests you don’t ‘play’ a character. I read this with a group of my traveling sisters and because we were always at very slightly different points in the book, our opinions and theories kept misaligning in a good way.I took a bit of a break from all my Regency romances this fall in favor of some spooky books for September and October! This was a *insert another sports analogy for some kind of goal (I don't watch sports so I only know a few)*. I am always a little hesitant to read a book that is receiving a load of hype, but I am happy to say that this book stands firm against its reputation.
I've said it before, and I'm sure I'll say it again - thriller/suspense novels generally suffer in this area. His second thriller, BELIEVE ME, was also a Sunday Times bestseller, as were his subsequent books THE PERFECT WIFE, PLAYING NICE and MY DARLING DAUGHTER. But the more she settles into her role, she’s not sure who to trust – the police or the suspect… JUST WOW. I say it with such offhand nonchalance, such gratitude, that even I’d be surprised to discover it’s a lie. I’ve seen shy introverts become kings and queens, the ugly become beautiful and the beautiful repulsive.
