About this deal

What results is not only a sweet and savory journey through the City of Light but a moving, personal look at a mother-daughter relationship. i think i liked the idea of the book more than i liked the execution, even though i knew on some level that of course the idea was bound to be better than the execution. The book started annoying me on the very first page with this gem: "I started smoking to prepare for smoky Parisian cafés". Everything you need to know about milk and dairy products, the different steps involved in processing them, their diversity and health benefits. French Milk is an illustrated and photographic journal of a six week trip to Paris she took with her mother.

It was like Lucy literally took her diary as is and printed it into a book, which I suspect is what she did. The fact that her divorced parents are on good terms, a fact she casually drops in, resonated with me, especially when her father comes to join them for a brief visit during their six-week trip. However, Knisley also fails to really talk about the realisations that she had in regards to coming-of-age and dealing with a new stage of her life. I think one of the reasons I enjoyed this so much is that it reminded me of my own travel journal when I spent a month road tripping around Europe with my family. One gets a good look into Parisian life, but also in the internal journey of finding who one is and who one is not. UHT milk in France is marked as keeping for three months unopened, although it is actually usable for six to nine months.

French Milk is a travelogue, and as such, sometimes the details of each meal become less interesting toward the end. I tried to refrain myself from reading the book in one sitting, as I knew that I would want more and more of it. Beginning with a love for Archie comics, Tintin and Calvin and Hobbes, she has been making comics in some form or another since she could hold a pencil. It may just be me, but I don't think it's a coincidence that my favourite comics artists don't have degrees in any form of art. it remains to be seen if knisley will look back on this work and think "oh my god, i was such an EMBARRASSMENT!An Age of License and Displacement are paired travelogues about youth and family, coming out this year (Fantagraphics Books, 2014).
