About this deal

Sofie the wife of a Scientist who wasn’t given the choice not to join the nazi’s and Lizzie, the sister of a war vet who came back not right after the war. Yet it soon becomes clear that if Jürgen does not accept the job, their income would be put on the line, and so would their lives.

She wonders if being married to Jürgen makes her as complicit as her husband when it comes to Hitler’s crimes. Although, Jurgen and Sofie vehemently opposed everything that the Nazis stood for, Jurgen was forced to accept the position.I’d be honored and thrilled if you choose to enjoy and follow along (see subscribe or follow option), promote, and/or share my blog. Perfect for reading book groups it does beg the question of what choice would YOU make in a no-win situation? If America were to become a racist authoritarian state, would you rebel, become an activist, ‘go along to get along’, see your children raised as white supremacists and Evangelicals? Especially with the main character Sofie having a Jewish best friend on one hand, but also increasingly Nazi-focused other friends as well as the obligation to follow the new rules or face grave consequences for their family. Kelly Rimmer’s novel follows the two very different lives of Sofie, who is married to a German rocket scientist during World War II, and Lizzie, who lived in the Texas panhandle during the dust bowl of the 1930s and eventually marries an American rocket scientist.

On top of this, the story also focuses on the Great Depression and how difficult life was in 1930s (rural) Texas through Lizzie’s POV. Twenty years later, Jürgen is one of the many German scientists offered pardons for their part in the war, and taken to America to work for its fledgling space program. Suppose like Lizzie, America had never handed anything to you even though you are a citizen, never a Nazi? Friendship with Jews gradually becomes something that will attract punishment, being made an example of.Eventually Jurgen, as part of Operation Paperclip, is settled in Huntsville, Alabama to assist the United States fledging space program. Then in the 1950’s timeline the United States government wants the German rocket technology and moves many scientists and chemists to the United States. In 1950, in Huntsville, Alabama, Jurgen was one of several German scientists that were pardoned for their involvement in the war and with the Nazis and was offered a high level positions in the American space program stationed right in Huntsville. While Sofie is trying to rebuild a life in America, Lizzie is determined to make it difficult for her.
