Rissa, Auren's only sort-of friend is the only one I like a little, although the vibes are a little off. It is hard to rate this though because of all the abuse that happens in here, and so obviously I didn't enjoy those parts. As ever friends, you know i always want people to try books regardless of reviews to form their own opinions but this just isnt worth it. the authors writing is really good, there’s a scene where kind Midas fucked up and after the way he was apologizing it Auren had my ass wanting to accept his apology.The complex protagonist, Auren and I can't wait to see her grow more into herself and her ribbons thingy. How can he easily use her, and tries to maintain her trust at bay through sweet nothings, how he mantains her hooked in that draining relationship through intermittent affection and their past memories as his lover and savior, how manipulative he can be, and how unbalanced the relationship is in terms of power. This book was difficult to enjoy because I kept hoping for a reprieve for the heroine and there was none to be had. You know, this probably would’ve been even better if I didn’t accidentally read 76% of the second book thinking it was the first book… but damn, coming back to the actual first book was a good idea. And when she's not being a gold-plated sex toy for the man who casually uses her love for him like a bartering chip, she's Mithridates-ing her liver with continuous doses of wine.

Personally, I don't have people that enjoy reading as much as I do around me irl so to be able to hype and talk and be excited about a book together is just a pure bliss for me. Reading a story from the point of view of a woman who has only been gaslit, used, and abused for most of her life, and is unable to understand the horrific situation she's in is fundamental to all readers, both men and women.I would march out in London streets and protest that they aren't actually creating an imprint to publish these books. Despite the YA-looking cover, and its striking similarity in title and design to the Marissa Meyer book GILDED (which I keep mixing it up with), this is not a book for the kiddies. It’s on this journey Auren comes into her own having to dig down deep discovering reserves of strength she thought she was no longer capable of. Literally only two of them were good, but the rest omg no no I don't think I've ever felt a stronger urge to murder some characters. Anyway, they're ambushed by bad people (Snow Pirates, actually, which sounds like a character you'd see on Neopets, only, you know, cuddlier and without the sexual sadism and rape).
