Gagosian Gallery is pleased to announce an exhibition of twenty new photographs by Gregory Crewdson. The second chapter focuses on Crewdson's use o f the window, as both a self-referencing device used to highlight the intrinsic nature o f photography and also as a site where voyeurism is emphasized.

In a 2020 interview for his book Alone Street, Cate Blanchett asks Crewdson about the “profound sense of waiting” that many of his subjects share. So now I’m in the process of location scouting for this picture and then working with a very large team of people including carpenters and landscapers to build this house. Gregory Crewdson - Twilight series, by robo on Nov 17, 2023 23:46:30 GMT 1, 20 lucky winners - what’s that?

The eerie effect of twilight crossed with strong artificial light - street lights, house lights, lights from the sky - is exaggerated by Crewdson's choice of backdrop, which is almost always nondescript suburban America. I’m revisiting this picture on the 25th Anniversary of Twilight because, as my first street scene of this kind, it has become very important in my iconography and visual language. Joyce Carol Oates suggests that the questions posed by Crewdson's cinematic photography are not mysteries to be solved, but mysteries to experience. When he was a graduate art student in the mid-1980s, the photographer says he was struck by Lynch's masterpiece, Blue Velvet. Each of the photos was elaborately staged in a manner likely to reference eerie shows such as The Twilight Zone 2 or films such as Close Encounters 3 which mainly deal with paranormal events. The original press release for an exhibition of work by Gregory Crewdson titled "Twilight" and held at Luhring Augustine, NYC, February 19 - March 25, 2000.

With Twilight, a series of 40 elaborately-staged photographs taken between 1998 and 2002, Gregory Crewdson arrived at the epic, filmic approach which has come to define his instantly recognisable images. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Crewdson's recent photographs are increasingly dark and mysterious in tone as they move deeper into the psychological bedrock of social alienation, personal obsession, and sexual desire. The first chapter situates Crewdson's photographs in an art historical context and aligns him with contemporary photographers working with the same themes.

As Rick Moody suggests in his essay, Crewdson seems preocupied with "the resection of the suburban ideal, where dream strategies, like condensation and displacement, the action of metaphor, undergird the here and now.
