The eerie effect of twilight crossed with strong artificial light - street lights, house lights, lights from the sky - is exaggerated by Crewdson's choice of backdrop, which is almost always nondescript suburban America. With Twilight, a series of 40 elaborately-staged photographs taken between 1998 and 2002, Gregory Crewdson arrived at the epic, filmic approach which has come to define his instantly recognisable images. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Crewdson's recent photographs are increasingly dark and mysterious in tone as they move deeper into the psychological bedrock of social alienation, personal obsession, and sexual desire. The first chapter situates Crewdson's photographs in an art historical context and aligns him with contemporary photographers working with the same themes.

As Rick Moody suggests in his essay, Crewdson seems preocupied with "the resection of the suburban ideal, where dream strategies, like condensation and displacement, the action of metaphor, undergird the here and now.
