About this deal

If Tarantino wrote a comic, trying to encapsulate everything that’s flagrantly awesome about the crime grindhouse subgenre, it would turn out looking like Gun Honey.

Written by Hard Case Crime founder Charles Ardai, illustrated by Ang Hor Kheng, colored by Asifur Rahman and lettered by David Leach, Gun Honey is violent tale of redemption, bullets, revenge and love, with again a lot of violence. When a gun smuggled into a high-security prison leads to the death of dozens and the escape of a brutal criminal, notorious weapons smuggler Joanna Tan is enlisted by the U. At the time, I was thinking of romance novels, but it could just as easily apply to the first collection of Gun Honey. The gangster notices a beautiful woman in a blue bikini sunning herself, and he sends his goons to invite her to visit his yacht. That artwork by Ang Hor Khengreally is pretty good; it fits the story perfectly and tells it's own story very competently. More than any kind of central theme, pulp and grindhouse are about using certain aesthetics and elements to create a specific experience. However, it's a perfect excuse for some well-drawn, almost cinematic, action scenes with gun fights.

Everything is a bit skimmed over when the author could have easily gone into more detail to flesh out these characters and this world. She is not a gun runner but someone who can sneak into anywhere and place a gun for someone else to use.The indie comic I would like to spotlight today is Gun Honey 1 by Charles Ardai and artist Ang Hor Kheng. She's very good at getting guns into locations that people would not normally think a gun could get into (opening scene has her smuggle in a gun onto a boat by carrying the weapon in pieces attached to her bikini).

If a book is going to get the blood flowing, there's not reason at least a little bit of it can't be flowing to the brain. No wonder they took to hard boiled crime novels and authors so avidly, even giving film noir it's name.

Tan refuses an offer she (almost) can’t refuse, and that setup lays the groundwork for bigger things coming in the series. It seems the world she's moving in now isn't so far from where she grew up, and she has motives which may mean that consequences and ethics take second place. When things go awry after effortlessly smuggling a firearm into a high-security prison that leads to mass casualties, she finds herself trapped and forced by the U.

This first volume of Gun Honey wrapped up a little too neatly, but Hard Case Crime and Titan announced there's a volume two coming. When a gun smuggled into a high-security prison leads to the escape of a brutal criminal, weapons smuggler Joanna Tan is enlisted by the U. There were a few moments where one had to evoke the "suspension of belief" clause one signs when reading a book but it IS a graphic novel after all so just sit back and enjoy the ride.
