About this deal

Totuși, schimbarea încolțește în mijlocul civilizației când în scenă intră Sherkaner Underhill, un tânăr și genial inventator păianjen are vrea sa răstoarne constrângerile, tradițiile și mentalitatea întregii specii. I'd be much happier if it lingered, and failing that am happy to reread the passage several times in a row just to get the necessary enjoyment from the scene. So the story of the "Emergents" versus the Qeng Ho was every bit as interesting as what was happening on Arachna.

Localizers are tiny devices which can contain a simple processor, sensors, and short-range communications.I can't help but feel that the book would have been better if it couldn't have trimmed off 100 or 200 pages of this information throughout the book, and in its place spend more time at the end.

The first are Qeng Ho, wandering traders, who try to keep the human civilization (light years apart) the whole. The innermost, the "Unthinking Depths", surrounds the galactic core and is incapable of supporting advanced life forms at all. A Deepness in the Sky is not going to dislodge another book from that list but it is still an indispensable read all the same. Initially the Qeng Ho and Emergents form a fragile truce as they observe the aliens, whom they dub ‘Spiders’ due to their arachnid appearance, but there are a number of plots brewing below the surface, and fairly soon there is a major betrayal that brings both sides into open conflict. For almost 800 pages, Vinge takes us through a wide range of relationships, both human and spider, and if you love this type of thing, you will be enthralled. The spider's world is remarkably like that of Earth, with several states and even a cold war between the two largest. It takes longer than it should for the ties to grow strong enough to tug on your heart-strings, and somewhere in that delay the fifth star is lost from the rating.

In a sense, they are human computers, something like the Mentats of Frank Herbert‘s Dune but far less independent. This book is long--and I don't exactly want to advocate adding another 200 pages to it, and yet the ending just seemed overly rushed.A Fire Upon the Deep που έδειξε το όραμά του ενός μακρινού μέλλοντος, θυμίζοντας κάτι από την μαγεία των καλύτερων της Χρυσής Εποχής και φτιάχνοντας ένα διαστημικό έπος μεγάλου εύρους, ο Vernor Vinge γυρνάει στο βραβευμένο με Hugo A Deepness in the Sky, το δεύτερο μυθιστόρημα της σειράς Zones of Thought, τριάντα χιλιάδες χρόνια στο παρελθόν, πηγαίνοντάς μας σε μια ιστορία Εμπόρων, δουλεμπόρων και εξωγήινων, αλλά και εξερεύνησης και εκμετάλλευσης, συνωμοσίας και προδοσίας, και διαμάχης και επιβίωσης· σε ένα συναρπαστικό, επικό prequel πρώτης επαφής. A Deepness in the Sky takes place in the Slow Zone, though Vinge does not explain the connections, and the characters in the story remain unaware of the zones' existence.
