Agwa’s key ingredients are Bolivian coca leaves, Brazilian guarana and Chinese ginseng which work together to offer a herbal, minty scent followed by a thick, syrupy mouthfeel awash with spicy notes, sweet menthol and the depth of the herbaceous ingredients. It is the first and only dry spicy Cuban rum on the world market, one of the best distilleries on the island. Certainly not shy to aromas, it promises scents of spices, citrus peel, grapefruit and subliminal honey bread. It's also got some mizunara (Japanese oak) matured whisky in the mix, which comes through as a complex spicy and almost incense-like note.

It has a gentle and mysterious sweetness of cocoa accompanying the punch of coffee on the finish, along with the lingering, peppery trace of spice. This is a 40% spiced rum, and it's actually quite expensive for the spiced rums that I've been doing. The combination is a seductive, silky smooth spiced batch which works perfectly straight, over ice or mixed. It is spiced with coffee and cacao which have played a large hand in Cuba’s history and aji dulce which is one of the most distinctive flavours in Cuban cuisine.It's this latter element that produces a gentle peppery note to the dark feel of coffee and chocolate, lifting the flavour profile and making this something quite unusual. Black Tears is a spiced Cuban rum, made in Bodega Vigia, with a marriage of dry rum, cuban spices, coffee, cacao and aji dulce. The hot-sweet taste is what separates this rum from all other spicy rums, as well as its low sugar content (9g/L).
