Of the 2,224 passengers and crew aboard, more than 1,500 died, making the sinking one of the deadliest for a single ship up to that time. When he is not writing, James enjoys singing and playing and listening to music, and being with his growing family. Born in 1887 in Argentina, the eldest child of Irish immigrants, at the age of 21 she became the breadwinner for her widowed mother and five siblings when she commenced a career as a stewardess and nurse on some of the most famous ocean going vessels of the day. The lucid and clear writing also helps break down the journalistic practices of the early 20th century. While the liner’s loss has been the subject of numerous films, documentaries and publications in the years that followed, in this book the author James W.

There are many myths surrounding the ship, ranging from supernatural warnings of danger through to the belief that all women and children were offered places on the lifeboats first. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. However, this does deter from the usual Titanic norm of reading about the passengers' experience of the sinking. From author Robert Ballard, the famed explorer who discovered the Titanic wreckage in 1985, and illustrator Ken Marschall who has worked on many books based on the Titanic in the past, comes this larger than life account about one of the most poignant moments in maritime history. The pair had met in 1897 at evening classes, where they were taught by the best as apprentices to a line of craftsmen who went back to the Arts and Crafts movement's William Morris and included the eccentric TJ Cobden-Sanderson - a man who ended his career by throwing blocks of his own typeface off Hammersmith Bridge and into the River Thames so that nobody could copy him. This book also tells the readers about those passengers of the ship that survived the wreck, and I appreciated the level of dedication that the author had clearly put in, conducting interviews with families and telling the story of not only that voyage but the living breathing people that escaped a horrible fate. The author has a great mind for detail and is widely respected for his prolific library on many historical events.
