I honestly can not believe that an installment in this series actually got less than 4 stars and that makes me so sad. We were spoilt for choice in this book with sleeper trains, the Metro, personal steam engines on branch lines and even model trains.

This is a story about deception, about detective work, the importance of learning other languages, about friendship and family, about secrets and codes, and most importantly about trains.It would have been quite useful to have it, as I was struggling to figure out how one branch of the family were related, but that was a minor thing. This time however the adventure is planned as Nat has been invited to travel by train to help solve a mystery.

I do hope going forth more recurring characters are brought into the mix as the baron was; while being introduced to an entirely new cast is fun, sometimes you do want old roots to peek out of the ground from time to time.The Adventures on Trains series is published in the UK and US by Macmillan, and is licensed to fifteen countries around the world, including China, the Czech Republic, France, Greece, Italy, Japan, Latin America, the Netherlands, Romania, Russia, Spain and Sweden. And so it is with Danger At Dead Man's Pass that takes the series to somewhere spooky and spectral and (when the resolution comes) deeply moving. Like I've said before, I have little to no interest in trains and the like but these books make me care about them.

Whilst Hal and Nat did travel to reach the crime scene and trains were still a key component of the story, I did miss the element of a crime occurring on a train and needing to be solved before it reaches its final destination. Hal is swept up by his Uncle and off into an adventure involving spies, creepy legends and a very fine, rather gothic, funeral train. Hal and his Uncle Nat were as wonderful as ever, with some new characters that added depth and intrigue to the story, as well as several atmospheric locations that really added to the experience.
