About this deal

Waris Dirie's memoir is an extraordinary journey : from desert nomad,to domestic servant,to supermodel,to UN ambassador for the elimination of FGM. Miller's travel essays have appeared in the Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, San Francisco Chronicle and Los Angeles Times . Waris was also interviewed by Laura Ziv for the magazine Marie Claire, in which she decided to tell about the cruel ritual of female genital mutilation and also her own destiny resulting in a wave of sympathy and protest worldwide against FGM. Moving with relatives to London, she worked for a while at a McDonald's and was discovered by chance by fashion photographer Terence Donovan. Waris Dirie is played by an Ethiopian supermodel and the face of Estee Lauder, Liya Kebede, who had already played roles in two big productions: “The Good Shepherd” directed by Robert De Niro and “Lord of War” by Nicolas Cage.

Similarly, when she arrives in the Somalian city from the desert, she doesn't know her relative's address or even the neighbourhood, and yet finds herself,in front of that house. A few years later, her father wanted to marry her off,to a much older man in exchange for five camels. From the deserts of Somalia to the world of high fashion, she battles against oppression and emerges a real champion. Waris is a survivor and I admire her greatly for having the courage to talk about all the things that she so openly talks about in this book, from the FGM to fashion industry. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average.

Desert Children” is in many ways a shocking book but it is also a book full of strength and hope for millions of women worldwide. El libro es un recorrido por toda su vida, empezando por su niñez en una familia nómada de Somalia, hasta convertirse en una famosa modelo en Europa y América. It is not just a wonderful memoir and a tale of amazing bravery of Waris Dirie, but also an detail account of FGM from the perspective of a victim. Then, aged 12, when her father attempted to arrange a marriage with a 60 year old stranger in exchange for five camels – she took flight.I know that “Desert Flower” contains an important message which is shared by all people: the respect for human dignity. But the book is far more than merely an experience of bearing witness to what was done to one girl and what continues to be done to others. Waris Dirie (Somali: Waris Diiriye, Arabic: واريس ديري‎) (born in 1965) is a Somali model, author, actress and human rights activist. Today she is fighting as UN Ambassador against female genital mutilation, which happens to 8,000 girls every day.
