About this deal

Het voelde enorm warm aan om te lezen over de boekenwinkel, en de vreugde die een boek teweeg kan brengen bij mensen. This book tells the story through multiple different character POVs and gives some brilliant book recommendations along the way, prescribing reading as a form of therapy which I'm always on board with. Everyone had differing experiences in the Covid pandemic, and their needs differed depending on their jobs/ home life/ security/ wants and desires. Yet again Stephanie Butland has hit upon a wonderful idea and has created some lovely characters in these vignettes, all of whom have a different issue. I also liked the times when the author directly addressed the reader, telling us that it is okay not to love the book that everyone else is raving about, and that it’s okay to give up on a book which we are not enjoying, that reading should be a pleasure and not a chore.

While fiction, it is packed with the realities of what real people encountered, suffered through, triumphed over. I loved Lost For Words so I was looking forward to this but I’m afraid I found it very disappointing. Kelly also comes up with the idea of a ‘book pharmacy’, prescribing books to help people as they deal with problems, whether or not related to the pandemic. As certain as I have always been that I can be alone without being lonely, opening the covers, turning the pages, I know that I will find comfort in reading a book.We follow their life-long love story from when they first meet and theirs is a really poignant part of the book. Now she is happier, healthier, and more careful with her precious life and the precious people and things in it. A love letter to books, so many are mentioned and how they might help with various emotional states.

But the Kindle edition was available for just 99p, and we were just a few days away from flying to the UK.I come from Whitby and know York very well and there were countless mistakes regarding both places which really annoyed me and prevented me believing that’s where they were supposed to be.

This beautifully written novel is a tribute to all independent booksellers who have always been creatively bringing readers and books together to comfort, educate, transform, escape, remember, hope, and dream. It is not one I could recommend to everyone without explaining the triggers of which there are a lot. They have decided to set out on their last journey together, without ever leaving the bench at the bottom of their garden in Whitby.

Along the journey there is kindness and thoughtfulness, there are situations that arise that overcome preconceptions and finding commonality along with plenty of honesty. I don't think it helped that I've had respiratory issues for the last six months and the descriptions of people fighting for breath were a little too familiar! However, it was a joy to read and I love the idea of a book pharmacy and even reading this book will give you lots more to add your “to read lists”.

One day a letter arrives from George and Rosemary enclosing a cheque and asking them to send them books they can read aloud to each other. Others flit in and out of the book and we get to know their situations and the unique pressures facing each of them at that time. I had a little smile when Flowers for Mrs Harris by Paul Gallico was mentioned, as I’m currently listening to that on audiobook. At the very time when people most need books to widen their horizons, or escape from their fears, or enhance their lives, the doors are closed. Also in Jersey, although we had a lockdown and restrictions in 2020, and then small ones again later on, it was nothing like what the UK experienced. All in all, I enjoyed the book and look forward to exploring the reading suggestions at the back of the book. So I made the purchase, and then read over half the book on the flight, finishing it a few days later. I liked the idea that when you read the first sentence of any book, you are completing the author’s work.
