About this deal

I wrote a short story a number of years ago that explored the idea of saving your consciousness and after you're killed, be regenerated, and in that way have a sort of crappy immortality as I describe it in "Mickey7.

Tonally, it's a good fit for fans of The Martian or The Murderbot Diaries, but I was hoping for a little more heft, probably because I enjoyed the premise and worldbuilding so much. Also, if you haven't seen Moon, me equating the movie to this book spoils a pretty significant plot reveal in the film, so. The native species are growing curious about their new neighbors, and that curiosity has Commander Marshall very afraid. He goes out on dangerous missions – usually to suss out whether giant worm-like “creepers” are threatening the base – to die. The idea of duplicate Expendables is universally loathed, and if caught, they will likely be thrown into the recycler for protein.

The protagonist is human, but his tone and dry humour are on a par with the narrator from the Murderbot Diaries (so if you like that, you'll love this, and vice versa). There are many thought-provoking subjects and the author has that ability to make it feel light, humorous, and entertaining. It draws readers in with flippant black humor and a clever premise, then stabs them in the back with devastating insight into the human talent for suppressing intolerable truths. It's also funny how this is supposed to be two versions of the same guy, but from the moment I met 8, I disliked him.

A little bit of sneaky subversion and I was willing to forgive it the Jack the Giant Killer vibe because I did warm to the protaganist. This movie is built around the idea that a guy comes back to find that they’ve already created a new copy of him. Despite the recruiter trying to talk Mickey from taking the Expendable job, due to the horrifying job description, Mickey takes it.

Now, the only reason this isn't a 5-star read for me is because there were a couple of chapters in the middle that dragged a little but other than that I loved every minute of this.
