About this deal

Originally a non-fiction list with something of an ecological flavour, Abacus has evolved over the years to become one of the most renowned homes for quality fiction and non-fiction, and one with a particularly strong tradition in bestselling memoirs, notably Nelson Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom and historian William Woodruff's double No. In 1830, as the end of the world approached, the charismatic, hunchbacked prophet of a religious sect settled in Lancashire heeds the biblical injunction and chooses seven virgins ‘for comfort and succour’. Loved the way different characters tell different aspects of the story from a different point of view and contradict each other.

Jane Rogers shows us the lives of four very different characters as they come to terms with living with 'a small crazed hunchback' and surviving the rigours of life in the early nineteenth century. Hannah is a non-believer, intelligent and idealistic, with connections to the labor and utopian movements that are the secular counterparts to Wroe’s millennialist religion. An engaging, serious and gleefully ironic novel, one that leaps headlong into the most ambitious and risky territories: faith, love and existential meaning. Her voice is as warm and soft as a dove's, and her face, of all of them, the most generous and intelligent. We see each of them grow from their point of entry into the narrative, and although the development isn’t always in a positive direction it’s very believable. The light is poor, a couple of tapers only burning at each end of the table, and a small smoky fire hissing in the great hearth. Wroe, a properly enigmatic villain, is silent with most of the women but engages Hannah in talk about her secular activities and her idealistic beliefs in the possibility of a better world. Reading the true history of Mr Wroe is infuriating re how clergymen have gotten away with so much for so long. Rachel and Rebekah were chosen, I rejoice to say, and they greeted their fate with a flood of grateful tears. The cult is led by prophet John Wroe, an intense, powerful man, who asks his congregation to give him seven virgins to look after his needs.

It did form the basis of a TV play so perhaps that is the reason behind the extra dramatic attention given to the particular four women? The word had spread even outside members of our church, for there were several unfamiliar faces present. I also don’t know much about this particular story, and not having that background might be the reason for the blandness.

Even though he thinks it futile, he does not stop her assisting in the setting up of unions for the town's millworkers. I was completely drawn into their world, interested in how each of them sees their role and their opportunity in life. Rogers, who has four previously published novels, tells her tale in the voices of four of the seven women. Some want to be chosen - the pious old maid and the beautiful egotist with a secret that needs to be hidden.

During the thrilling social change of the mid-1950s, four remarkable women who previously served secretly during WWII as code-breakers, turn their skills to solving murders overlooked by police. The Creative Writing audio lessons provided by the Open University on iTunes includes two interviews with Jane Rogers on her craft, both dealing with Mr Wroe's Virgins. Born in Bradford in 1782, the son of a woolcomber, he was instructed to convert to Judaism by a vision he had during a serious illness in his late thirties. Nothing historical is known about these women, not even their names, but Rogers has created four very different and believable characters that I enjoyed getting to know. The publisher of this book provided free copies of the book to have their book reviewed by a professional reviewer. It is wonderful to watch her progression from savage’, as she is described by her sisters, into a ‘full’ person. We are given seven fictitious characters who are meant to represent the "virgins", though some are not.
