At the top end of the market, Thetford’s Porta Potti 565 has an electric (battery-powered) flush or manual. Next up we have a model that has a price tag that sits in between the two we’ve already discussed. From TOOGOO, this portable toilet also features a folding design to make it easier to store away in your bag. It is made from high-quality Oxford cloth and despite its foldable design, is rather sturdy and can handle loads up to 100kg (15-stone) (which is less than the CarpLife Products Limited option, but still a reasonable weight capacity, given its shape, size and how much it weighs). This separation prevents the need for water or chemicals, and combined with coffee chaff or sawdust, both dries out the waste and masks the smell. Toilet paper should be kept separate as this takes longer to decompose.

Many camping toilet bags (and the Travel John bags) have a sort of crystal-filled ‘nappy’ inside to soak up liquid. We think this is important because a plastic bag filled with sloshiness sounds like a disaster waiting to happen and isn’t pleasant for waste collectors. Because the solids remain dry, odour is limited, then further extracted by the use of coconut coir (husks from the inner shell) and the 12V fan, which you wire into the 12V electrical system, drawing 2W or 0.17A.

One question I’ve seen asked on various platforms has revolved around the strength of the Bivvy Loo in use. As you can imagine, portable camping toilets need to be emptied, so consider the disposal method of the toilet to suit your preferences.

Constructed with a strong steel axis frame, the Bivvy Loo provides stability and can support over 150kg, ensuring durability and peace of mind. Despite its robust build, it weighs just 2.4kg, making it lightweight and easy to carry. So how does it work? Well firstly it has two waste compartments – one for ‘solids’ and one for ‘liquids’ – you could call them number 1 and number 2 if you prefer! Compartment ‘2’ should be lined with a biodegradable liner and after use sprinkled with sawdust or peat or similar – this helps suppress nasty niffs and starts the composting process (a natural degradation of waste by bacteria).

When combined with the large 19L waste tank, you can expect to get lots of use out of the toilet before needing to empty it. This doesn’t cause a nasty pool of waste to develop however, as it’s made from odour-resistant materials and comes with a waste indicator level to let you know when to empty it. The major downside we can see with this model is the diameter of the actual toilet itself. While a woman is unlikely to have any problems with it, due to size and biology (trying to be tactful and keep things clean here), many men might struggle to fit everything within the hole. If the Air Head is on the large side, another option, recommended by boat owner Andrew Polson is the Simploo Waterless Composting Toilet, which is made in the UK. Odours are removed with a 12V fan which can be powered by a 12v battery, solar panel or plugged in to the mains with a 230v adaptor.

It’s a substantial portable toilet and made of very rugged plastics which give a reassuring feel to sit on. It can take a weight of 200kg which is over 30 stones – no problem even for the biggest campers. There are no chemicals in play at all which helps our water systems avoid getting contaminated. The outer section has a lid which allows access to the inside where the action takes place. There are also a couple of carry handles for moving the toilet around. We will make every reasonable effort to deliver your products safely and in accordance with any specific delivery instructions that you give us however we will not be liable for any delay, damage or loss as a result of complying with such specific instructions. Mine have long since been exhausted and I just use bags and dispose of them in the bin aside a particular lay-by on my way home from my syndicate. Each bag contains enough powder for over 100 uses of a portable toilet, providing exceptional value and long-lasting effectiveness. Whether you're camping, fishing, or engaging in any outdoor activities that require a portable toilet, the CarpLife Bivvy Loo Super Absorbent Powder is your reliable companion.

Top 5 Portable Toilets

The next bivvy toilet we want to consider is designed and manufactured by a company called FiNeWaY that has a very elegant if practical, look and feel to it. It has been made from high-density polyethene, a material chosen for its reliability and robustness, to help provide a stable place to do your business without fear of it tipping over and potentially messing up your bivvy or the secluded spot you have chosen to answer the call of nature.
