Description

A beautifully observed, tender love story with characters you really care about…a bit like Normal People . I devoured it.” ― Jojo Moyes, New York Times bestselling author of Someone Else's Shoes This novel is poignant and deeply moving, and written in beautiful, poetic prose that often had me in tears. It is one of my favourite books I have read this year and one I will no doubt reread. Besides the romantic angst, Talking at Night also discusses what often plagues us in our daily life: grief, insecurities, people-pleasing tendencies, self-doubt, and mental health. It's not a firework of a novel that will make you realise something you didn’t already know or provide you with lighthearted escapism. It’s very much grounded in reality, and I loved it for that. This book is about Rosie and Will, the practical girl and the bad boy and how they fall for each other, but shouldn’t, can’t, etc. something happens on Will’s birthday, and it shapes their lives forever. This beautifully written book begins in a small town in the 1990s and is split into three parts entitled ‘before’, ‘after’, and ‘long after’ (as the book unravels we learn the reasons behind these headings). It follows our couple’s complicated relationship over the next several decades, as they both attempt to navigate the challenges familiar to all of us, from parental expectations to the complexities of family dynamics, love, loss and grief.

Beautifully written and keenly felt. It’s romantic but not a romance, for this novel is authentic to its bones. Beguiling, but also painfully honest, and that’s a rare and winning combination indeed.”

A beautifully observed, tender love story with characters you really care about...a bit like Normal People. I devoured it JOJO MOYES Is the character of Rosie based on herself? ‘Everybody asks that of an author’s debut, but while my emotional fingerprints are all over her – like the fact we both went to Oxford University and her sense of perfectionism – she’s entirely fictional. In fact, I think the way she lives her life, always trying to do the right thing by everybody and not always herself, is very relatable to most women.’

Deeply romantic . . . Reminded me of just how all-consuming and transformative first love can be. The more I read, the more I was completely immersed in the story of Rosie and Will and how life, and tragedy, conspire to keep them apart.”

Success!

A classic will-they-won't-they in the vein of David Nicholls, this novel is impossible to put down. A story of secret night meetings and calls, sunrises and bonfires, quiet moments and heartbreaking missed opportunities. Impeccable dialogue and wonderful characters that will stay with you for a long time." - Costanza Casati Talking at Night really captures the intensity of first love, and the frustration of unfinished sentences and unexpressed feelings, as well as the waves of grief that spill into every area of our lives, over and over.' Jane The characters of Will and Rosie lived in my head for a long time before I started writing this book,’ author Claire Daverley tells Grazia. ‘The dialogue between the two of them kept cropping up in my mind, until one day I felt it was time to get their characters down on paper. I never intended to write a love story, but I’ve always been fascinated by the human condition, and the light and the dark of who we are.’ And finally, what advice would you give to anyone thinking of entering the Caledonia Novel Award 2024?

Claire Daverley was born in 1991 and has been writing stories ever since she was six years old, inspired by art and film and her many trips to the library. After graduating with a degree in Fine Art from The University of Oxford, she began a career in publishing, writing about books by day but penning her own by night, on trains, and in the light of the early mornings. She has spent most of her life in Hertfordshire, but now lives in Scotland with her husband and spaniel. Quietly devastating, entirely beautiful, bruising and hopeful. In a world of compromise, Claire Daverley has created a perfect thing. Talking at Night takes its place amongst my all time favourites. I implore you to read it. I’ll never forget it.’ Chris Whitaker, author of We Begin at the End Can you tell us a bit about how you found your agent, Ariella Feiner? What have you found to be the most rewarding, and most challenging, aspects of getting your novel published? Wow... There's something special about reading a book in January that you know will make the top five by the end of the year. The story covers many sad and dark topics but the author has covered them so well. My heart was constantly broken throughout this whole story.PDF / EPUB File Name: Talking_at_Night_-_Claire_Daverley.pdf, Talking_at_Night_-_Claire_Daverley.epub

Talking at Night is a transcendent marvel. Daverley's debut is aching and tender. . . the lush, complex characters reminded me of Sally Rooney's work.' Amanda Eyre Ward, New York Times bestselling author of The Jetsetters Daverley tells a story that is plausible and beautifully written. Rosie and Will are complex and messy, and while romance plays a role, it’s less about “Do they end up together?” and more about “Who do they become?” She doesn’t sugar-coat depictions of mental illness, struggles with identity, addiction, family dysfunction, and trauma. The story feels real but never heavy. As a reader, I could both relate to and sympathize with Rosie and Will, even when they weren’t at their best. Visually-rich storytelling and a strong supporting cast added to my enjoyment - I loved Will’s grandmother and his sister Amber, particularly. They tell it like it is! What were the best – and worst! – pieces of advice you were given as you embarked on writing your novel? At 17, Rosemary Winters hopes there will be more to life than studying for her exams and counting calories to please her mom. Her energetic twin brother, Josh, has big dreams—he hopes to attend Cambridge. He’s taken to studying math with the broody Will White, a bad boy with a reputation for sleeping around, an absentee mother, and no current plans to go to university. Will first noticed Rosie singing at a bonfire, with her ever attentive doe eyes and enchanting voice, and hasn’t been able to forget her since. Rosie, on the other hand, could never imagine a boy like Will being interested in her, especially with her keen attention to school and what her friend Marley calls a “vanilla virgin” personality. And yet, one midnight conversation at the Winters’ house leaves Rosie noticing Will as much as he's been noticing her. The closer Will and Rosie get, though, the further Josh seems to pull away from his sister, until tragedy strikes and leaves their budding romance in shambles. Suddenly, Rosie’s dream of attending music school and Will’s travel plans are cut short, broken by the secrets they share and a loss they can’t overcome. As years pass, the two lose touch and find each other in different stages of life, but somehow, their attraction never wanes. Daverley’s moving debut outlines a lyrical story of unspoken words and one unending love: “But her voice keeps him awake that night. And again, the night after that.” While Rosie and Will’s love story is fraught with heartbreak and change, and although the journey is almost always tumultuous, their evolving friendship and unbreakable connection prove entirely worthwhile and real. They fall for each other as teenagers at a bonfire and start meeting at a nearby lighthouse to talk late into night.will has no reason to love her, she's so dull that it's painful. she didn't do anything for herself and yes i get that whatever but the way she just strings will along for so long when all he wanted was for her to love him. she's so rude fr, the most selfish. but he's also stupid for wanting love from her... the boring ass conversations... where's the connection? nowhere. Despite their different life goals and Rosie’s insistence that they just stay friends, their feelings intensify until a single night breaks them both and changes the entire course of both their lives. Over the many years that follow, circumstances, guilt and each one’s almost paralyzing inability to make choices for their own happiness, push them together and pull them apart repeatedly. Locations, jobs and partners change, but one thing is constant: their friendship. They fight, they laugh, they ignore each other, they seek each other out, but no matter what - they stay. Is that enough or are they both chasing a youthful fantasy? Dal punto di vista del lettore, sembra di essere trasportati all’interno della vita privata dei personaggi. Li si osserva intimamente e si sente ogni emozione in modo potente, come fosse la propria.
