Closer scrutiny of The Soviet Chess Primer, however, leads me to question the title chosen by Quality Chess for this new translation. Well it’s not a game collection but one book I think would be fantastic for starting out is Susan Polgar “Chess Tactics for Champions”, though it’s perhaps more intermediate than beginner. Lasker wrote the forward to the original Russian edition and the famous coach and author Mark Dvoretsky has written the new one for this English translation, it's his favorite chessbook of all time. Despite my reservations about the title, The Soviet Chess Primer is a fine book and its acclaim is deserved. I suspect, however, that the particular affection felt for it by former Soviets may have another source.

Ultimately, I'd recommend this for the serious beginner or early-intermediate chess player looking to deepen his or her knowledge of the game. However, where this book shines is that it provides enough examples (of increasing complexity) that reading the book will help the reader begin to recognize when those tactics might become relevant. It should not surprise us that youthful attachment to cherished books would persist, and in this case the attachment is justified. Maizelis’ book is fascinating, especially for the reader interested in chess culture and history, but it is not a primer by any stretch of the imagination.Ele cobre desde o movimento das peças até as três fases do jogo (abertura, meio jogo e finais), passando pelos elementos mais importantes (tática, estratégia e cálculo). Each chapter concludes with a whimsical set of “Entertainment Pages,” where miniatures and ‘fun exercises’ appear, and some of the original drawings are brought over from the Russian. Logical Chess' writing seems a bit puerile, and I can flip through pages pretty easily, whereas I like the density of the Soviet Primer.

The Soviet Chess Primer is a modern English translation of Maizelis’s witty introduction to the royal game.

The Soviet Chess Primer is a partial translation of the 1960 edition of Maizelis’ Shakhmaty osnovy teorii (Шахматы основы теории / Chess: Fundamental Theory).

It has inspired generations of Russians to take up the game, including arguably the two greatest players of all time, the 12th and 13th World Champions. This new edition of a timeless classic includes the original foreword from the 2nd World Champion, Emanuel Lasker, as well as an introduction from the most celebrated chess trainer of modern times, Mark Dvoretsky. Please remember it can take some time for your bank or credit card company to process and post the refund too.
