The only thing I would like more of is a citrus orange peel note, which is there, I just would like more of it.

Around 100 eaux de vide work together to create the rounded, bold flavour which is characterised by rich black pepper, a touch of spice and dry and candied fruit. The team at Courvoisier use their experience to ensure their cognacs are nurtured to deliver exceptional and complex flavour profiles of unerring quality. The sweet, nutty taste of the almond adds depth to your drinks and allows a regular liqueur coffee to become a thing of beauty.Find that place and you’ve found your way to Lot 40 – where we’ve distilled generations of knowledge, passion and hard work into the ultimate expression of Canadian Rye Whisky. A complex and smooth body with heavy rye spices and white pepper unites with roasted walnuts, English Toffee, and subtle dark fruits leading a warming finish. I have not had the opportunity to try it so I can’t comment on the taste, but the original did contain malted rye to supply the enzymes for starch conversion, whereas the present version uses 100% unmalted rye and use commercial enzymes for conversion.

On the bright side, it’s different from the typical American rye whiskey that’s usually on the sweeter side and/or heavy on rye flavor. I’m sure you know this already but the term “rye” in Canadian whisky is more of a colloquialism and doesn’t refer to any specific requirements. At some point during the 2000s, Lot 40 Rye was discontinued, which caused quite a stir among whisky enthusiasts who considered it to be one of the best Canadian whiskies out there. Over 500 years old and true to its original recipe, Benedictine has a nose fresh in spice and fresh fruit, prune and orange alongside liquorice and cloves. Rising to prominence during prohibition many classic cocktails simplyaren’t complete without a shot of Angostura Orange.

This would be what I’d consider my first real trip to Canada, as I’ve previously been to Victoria for only a few hours about a decade ago. It’s a peaty twist on a Manhattan created by Shaun Layton when he was still at L’Abattoir (I’m told he now works at Como Taperia in Vancouver).Maker’s Mark’s claim to fame is that they distill their bourbon to the lowest proof in the whole of the US.

Go back in time to the downright dirty history of the American speakeasy and you’ll find Angostura Orange bitters in a huge number of different drinks. Also, unlike most Canadian whiskeys – aka Canadian “ryes” – Lot 40 is aged in new charred oak casks, while Canadian “rye” are aged in used oak casks. Lot 40 Rye was discontinued for a while in the 2000's, which caused quite a stir among whisky enthusiasts but its been made in canada again for some time. Sadly not as expressive and flavorful as I had hoped for, what with it being pot distilled and worm tub-condensed.
