I was really annoyed by the author continously denouncing the clichés in movies, and then using the same clichés, isn't it contradicting? I'm changing my rating to a 5 stars simply because as soon as I woke up this morning, my first thoughts were of this book! I was a bit disappointed with the cover reveal but I’m hoping the story will make up for it and we’ll get to understand more of Chaol and his life.

So often our stories about romance depict one of two outcomes: happily ever after together, or at odds entirely. The narrative’s rise and fall coexists with the conventions of romantic films such as “the big date.

There are still some releases in September I want to get my hands on so a trip to Waterstones may be needed! But it's this normality that makes you love the story even more, as in other great romantic movies - have you ever heard of The Notebook? I think a lot of that is down to the fact that I’m really not a fan of “girl is warned off bad boy but falls for him anyway” stories. I understand this was most likely tongue-in-cheek and all that, but I found the MC often judged things very harshly while she herself engaged in the same behavior, which quickly turned me off from her.

But I don’t think that justifies being happy when she gets insulted for no reason when she’s actually being pretty decent and friendly. A wonderful and refreshing read of the truth of romance movies and how this doesn’t actually translate in real life.

I have to say that the relationship between Poppy and Noah was adorable to read about, but prepare yourself for a bit of a sad ending which left me kind of emotional and disappointed for the characters (don’t worry, no one dies). Audrey is struggling to cope with her crumbling home life so she escapes to work in the local cinema where she meets the movie cliché-filled, Harry who is everything she hates about romance movies. There are entire other layers to this book, and I actually liked some of them even more than the romance plot. The ending is the best bit of the book and one I read over and over again to fully absorb it because it’s so freaking awesome! And I miss that - times have changed, for sure, but there was a beauty and spark to them that we will never get back. And I really don’t think you can get away with hating your ex’s new girlfriend whilst hanging out with a guy you like and his ex girlfriend and being weird about her not being your biggest fan. Seemingly ‘normal’, Evie enters the tricky world of friendship and relationships, and the story slowly unravels to follow this character on a downward spiral as she relapses, but the ending is amazing because her friends stick by her and the SPINSTER CLUB is born! Audrey gets a job in her local cinema and meets the movie-cliché-filled Harry who goes against every rule she’s made against dating guys. This was a book full of magic as well as tantalising description of a world where you can be a part of the game but not everything is as it seems.
