Description

With a turn of the wheel and a spin of the cog, the oracular machinery of Barbara Moore’s Steampunk Tarot lumbers into action. Fantastically illustrated by Aly Fell, The Steampunk Tarot is an electric marriage of science and alchemy, nature and technology, human and machine. 78 evocative cards radiantly retool the images from Pamela Colman Smith’s Classic 1910 Tarot. The Steampunk Tarot: Wisdom from the Gods of the Machine has been created by John and Caitlín Matthews, with illustrations by Wil Kinghan. It is published by Tuttle. There are a number of spreads to choose from, with the stalwart 3 card tarot reading presented with many different reading options. The popular Horseshoe spread gets a makeover and a stripped down, reworked and renamed Celtic Cross takes center stage as the Panoramic Photograph. The pièce de resistance though is the exclusively created Difference Engine which shows how you can rework your outcome, steampunk style. The Steampunk Tarot Manual is a book that would stand against any other tarot book for sale in its own right. Explorative, creative, expansive and informative. Yes, it’s really that good. In Summary From the book: 6 of Cups Happy Memories. So a small change away from the general Rider Waite-Smith definition. Barbara goes on to explain that this card is also about creating happy memories amid sad or difficult times, which offers hope and reminds us that magic is everywhere, sometimes we have to create it. 8 of Cups Leaving something behind to search for something else. Barbara talks about being very prepared for something only to find it wasn’t what we really wanted, or that it failed somehow, and to move on; the fuzzy line between our dreams and reality and when to cut our losses. 10 of Wands Carrying a large burden or many burdens. Doesn’t seem unfamiliar but the explanation in the book is a great one talking about the burdens being our responsibilities created through cause and effect, the result of our choices as opposed to some enforced situation. She reminds us that the will of the wands is more than capable of coping with this situation and to not despair.

Steampunk Tarot Review by Mythic Silence

Enter a world of industry, machinations, adventurers and pioneers in the long awaited and highly anticipated Steampunk Tarot from Barbara Moore and Aly Fell… The King of Wands again looks a bit like a sneaky stage magician, standing behind his throne and looking out at the reader. The Two fo Cups – absolute magic! A male and a female figure are standing, facing each other. Each figure holds a cup, and is pouring something into the beaker on the table in front of them, Above them is a blue and white yin/yang figure, which is sending blue and white streams of energy wound around each other into the same beaker. Readers, please enjoy this guest blog post by Steele Alexandra Douris, author of the new Spirits, Seers & Séances. The Hierophant I adore, with its image of a grandfatherly figure, seated, with books to one side, and a young boy and girl sitting raptly at his feet, crossed keys between them. The Ace of Wand is incredibly powerful, showing a mechanical hand grasping a wand with growth on one end. The Six of Wands is another powerful card, with a soldier riding a mechanical horse, carrying a lance with a wreath on the end, very much the victorious individual!

Each card also has a little piece of Steampunk Wisdom, so if you wish to do a single card daily draw these little bits of wisdom are perfect for that. Each piece of wisdom also asks a question of you, which are perfect for journalling purposes. For example, below is the Steampunk Wisdom for 0 – The Apprentice: I love the scan that accompanies the chapter on Tarot basics – it is the Hierophant, which shows a very grandfatherly type figure seated in his chair, books on the table next to him, and a young boy and girl seated at his feet, paying rapt attention to what he is saying. This is a chapter in any book where I will say take with you what works, and leave the rest behind. There is good information here on reading the Tarot, but nothing is ever written in stone. What Moore does do is make you think, which is the most important thing one can do when reading the Tarot. (I am referring to reading in a conscious manner, not “over-thinking” every little thing.) I loved her suggestions that when practicing reading read for an imaginary querent (Seeker), pretend that a celebrity has asked for a reading, or use the Court Cards as people to read for. I was also intrigued with the sometimes androgynous nature of the Knights and other cards such as the middle figure in the 3 of Cups. Moore says: “one thing you should not pay too much heed to is gender. The gender used in the card is not an absolute indicator of the gender of the person represented.” In my own readings, I have found this to be a good mindset as often males have feminine characteristics and vice versa. The Devil Feeding the machine, becoming a slave to what you’ve created. This Devil shows us that our obsessions are not always related to the sensations of the body, but of the workaholic, our businesses and anything else that takes over our lives and demands to be put first. 6 of Swords In a reading, this card indicated the need to move to a different location to secure the answer to the problem. 3 of Swords Because sometimes things are just broken. However, the swords really only need removing for the machinery that pumps the heart to start beating again. This 3 of Swords offers hope. I am going to do something a little different here. Barbara has penned such a unique table of contents that I am going to include it here, verbatim:

Aside from the cards that made me double-take, there were some that also made me look longer at them than others. I was intrigued by what the image was saying, by what new direction it was stretching me in. Again, the Steampunk Tarot Manual was a great companion and guide in presenting the subtle changes in these cards from what I’m used to or had thought of. Each character has their own mix of skills, equipment, and expertise, and they might just have to work together to succeed. Will you trust your companions, and should they trust you? Not everyone is a hero after all. One of my favorite times of the year: gift-giving season. Here are some book suggestions in various categories. I hope you find something for your friends or for yourself if you’ve been very good! One of the cards that I was ambivalent over was the Fool. Showing a chimney sweep in a tall hat, with a dog at his feet, I see more the court jester than the Fool. And yes, in many ways they serve the same function. The High Priestess to me looks like a stage magician’s assistant, seated between two pillars made up of gears, wearing a top hat, holding Tarot cards in her right hand, with her left hand on a globe, which is surrounded y Tarot cards. While defining the Major Arcana are representing the theme of the story, and the Minor Arcana as the scenes and actions that carry out the theme, the Court Cards are seen as the people living, experiencing, and animating the themes, scenes and settings.

An ENORMOUS thank you to our LlewellynCon presenters today: Sterling Moon, Carmen Turner-Schott, Lindsay Fauntleroy, and Elhoim Leafar! The Eight of Cups is soooo steampunk! We see a female figurein the forefront, goggles on her head. Behind her is a mechanical mechanism, with eight arms outstretched, an upright cup on each arm. Soooo H.G. Wells! Along the same note is the Six of Swords. Here we see a male and a female figure in a “flying machine”, with a big balloon over them. The Victorian Steampunk Tarot is a semi-illustrated 78-card tarot from tarot author Liz Dean, who created the Art of Tarot. Each of the major arcana is a collage of steampunk-related elements, while the minors are arrangements of the suit element and symbol (Dragonflies, Bees, Beetles and Moths).
