You appreciate a simple setup. The SteelSeries Arctis 9 features simple controls and lets you run speaker inputs through the hub, meaning you don't have to manually change your ins and outs. Of course, you may be tempted to enhance the atmosphere by switching on the VSS (Virtual Surround Sound), but that would be a mistake. While it opens up the soundstage and gives a sense of surround sound you otherwise don’t get, it also sounds over processed and unnatural, with voices and effects such as footsteps going distractingly awry. Currently only available in Uncharted 4, although slated to appear in more games soon, 3D audio works by placing you within spherical sound spaces, plotting sound effects and audio in the space around you, a bit like Dolby Atmos but for headphones. They honestly look like a slightly less capable version of the Sony headphones I use, similar button layout. The 3D audio on mine blew me away when I listened to live music. If they’re anywhere close to the quality of my headphones for that price point then they’re a bargain. The Platinum headset isn’t Sony’s first 7.1 virtual surround-sound headset. That would be the Gold wireless headset, which launched a couple of years ago. If you’re on a tighter budget, the Gold headset is still definitely worth looking at. The chief difference between the Platinum and the Gold is driver size and 3D-audio compatibility.

It’s good news, then, that the core audio quality is so good – miles ahead of the competition, in fact. If you’re a PS4 gamer in need of a headset, this is the one to get, and even PC, Xbox and Switch players should seriously consider it. We’ve not heard a better alternative. Astro's reputation for gaming headsets has been the envy of other manufacturers for the better part of a decade now. Like all previous versions of the A50, this refreshed model is about as expensive as the market gets, but it's also right at the high-tide line for quality.

There’s plenty nice to say about Sony’s Platinum Wireless Headphones: They have exceptional –and balanced – audio performance and the mic sounds “above average” according to the people we spoke to. There’s also 3D Audio support that creates 100 virtual speakers, though honestly the headset doesn’t have the same panache in this area that you’d find on the competition’s pair of cans. You want something built to last. Although it's a more affordable headset, this is reflected through its build. The construction feels cheap, so it's a case of getting what you pay for.

PS5 Pulse Wireless Headset VS PS4 Platinum Headset PS5 Pulse Wireless Headset VS PS4 Platinum Headset

There's nothing special about the pulse headset. As all the processing is done by the PS5, any stereo headphones will work providing they're compatible with the PS5.

The PlayStation Platinum headset also supports a mode called “3D Audio”. While 7.1 surround sound may seem like more than enough, 3D audio somehow manages to rip you out of your sofa and put you into the action more than you would have ever thought possible. nessisonett MX3s can be found on sale and are great! I have the MX4s which are basically the same including sound quality but I do love the "pause when headphones are put down" feature.
