Description

Working across the wider Northeast and Yorkshire area, Northwoods currently hosts the Northwoods Innovation Programme funded by the Forestry Commission through the Woods into Management Forestry Innovation Funds (WiMFIF), part of the UK Government's Nature for Climate Fund. The Northwoods Innovation Programme has been established to accelerate innovative approaches and technology which improve the number and quality of woodlands in active management. As part of the Innovation Programme, Northwoods organises and hosts a wide range of events, including webinars and in person demonstration events, that communicate innovative ideas and tools to stakeholders that own or are involved in the management of woodlands. Forest Lab uses the latest online technology to advance knowledge exchange between woodland managers and scientists. It is hoped that the sharing of data collected by volunteer ‘stewardship scientists’ will promote woodland resilience.

Some grant schemes ask land managers to have an approved management plan in place prior to making an application. Use the small woodland plan template (macro enabled) ( ODT, 160 KB) template for woodland of an area less than 10 hectares - this is to apply for a felling licence, but is not eligible for funding to prepare a woodland management plan through Countryside Stewardship. If you are writing a woodland management plan with grant funding then you need to have your grant agreement in place before you start work on your plan. myForest offers data layers which cover Great Britain, as well as offering layers specific to England, Scotland, and Wales. These layers vary in uses from those which may be specific to forest creation or management, to generic layers useful in all cases. There are five levels from entry through to gold, as your score improves, you will move through these levels and eventually become Grown in Britain (GiB) audit ready. Responsive design, which means it fits the size of the screen you are using, making it easy to use with tablets and laptops.

Throughout this project, the team has engaged with the Forestry Commission and other community forest organisations to ensure that the project outcomes are as practical and relevant as possible to bring the greatest amount of unmanaged woodland into management in the North East and Wider Yorkshire Area. This is a collaborative project between Forest Research and Sylva Foundation, an environmental and forestry charity. It is funded by the Defra Future Proofing Plant Health Programme. If you have not already done so, the first step is to create and map the relevant Sub-compartments for which you wish to apply for a felling licence. When creating either a forest creation or management plan it is vital to outline the Forest Management Unit (FMU). The FMU is the area subject to a forest management plan or proposal. This area is selected by the owner and/or manager and will be determined by the nature of the forest, the proposed operations and both creation and management objectives. Extensive FMUs have the advantage of allowing a strategic approach to be taken in achieving UK Forestry Standard (UKFS) Requirements, both in terms of the area covered and the timescale. The main outputs of the project will be the building and testing of a new IT platform to support stakeholders with mapping tools, and links to other decision support tools. We will also be developing a woodland creation plan. Sub-compartments are individual creation and / or management areas outlined within the wider compartment and FMU. A woodland management plan gives land managers a structured way to plan and organise the sustainable management of woodland to a common industry standard. The Wildfire Project aims to collect valuable information and data to help understand wildfire risk, which in turn will be used to assess and decrease wildfire risk for myForest users. Volunteers complete questionnaires and a wildlife fire risk assessment at regular intervals. Tree Growth Project

For each Sub-compartment, select Edit Management Data and complete the Felling tab (see below). Refer to guidance in sections 6 - 8 of the Felling Licence Online User Guide for more information. Currently there are three live Forest Lab projects covering resilience, wildfire and tree growth, with plans to offer more in the future: HomeGrownHouse is a collaboration between London Metropolitan University, Grown in Britain and the Birling Estate. During 2021 we will be refining and retesting outputs with stakeholders beyond the Northern Forest in a second tree planting season. Climate Risk Indicators is a free online tool to visualise UK climate change data, including average, minimum and maximum temperatures, rainfall, and temperature extremes. It provides indicators of risk including for wildfire, agriculture, river levels, and transport. Information and a How to Guide are included within the Tool and through the Climate Resilience Programme. The UK imports 80% of its wood products and only 59% of UK woodlands are under active management. Many formerly coppiced woodlands have fallen out of regular harvest cycles, are more prone to diseases and pests, and contain a mixture of small, medium and large diameter trees with few markets. Our aim is for Forest Lab to contribute to society’s understanding of critically important issues affecting the resilience and future of our trees and woodlands. We hope that scientists will be more attune to the needs of landowners, and that landowners will be kept uptodate about emerging issues, technologies and opportunities to improve their woodland creation or management. For woodland holdings over 3ha, you can develop a plan using the Forestry Commission’s full Woodland Plan template, the Plan of Operations template, and your own maps. A grant is available to help fund the production of a woodland plan (Countryside Stewardship option PA3), where the full Forestry Commission template is used.
