Description

Considering his prolific output, his works for British seaside resorts are comparatively few, although it is worth remembering that his heyday preceded the inter-war golden age of the railway poster by more than 20 years. Intended for the army, he managed to fail the entrance examinations for Sandhurst, causing him to board a ship to Canada with his younger brother to try his luck as a pioneer farmer in Manitoba province. Utter the word ‘Skegness’ and many people will find it hard to resist interjecting, ‘is SO bracing’. It seems she may have indulged in one too many sherries as her rosy nose gives away her merry state.

If you can afford to spend more on a higher quality paper, then Photo Rag is our clear recommendation for a fine art paper print. Other uses, including exhibition catalogue and display, broadcast, advertising, book jackets and commercial packaging, are covered by our commercial terms. John Hassall's 'Skegness is SO Bracing' is one of the most iconic British railway posters and has been a popular image since its first publication by the Great Northern Railway in 1908.The commission in 1908 for the poster was for 12 guineas and with its slogan became an instant icon for the East coast town. John Hassall only visited Skegness once, in 1936 when he was given ‘the freedom of the foreshore’ by the town. Arriving on a later train, he was given a tour of the town and a dinner was held in his honour, after which he was presented with an illustrated vellum in recognition of all he had done to put Skegness on the map.

It’s widely considered to have put Skegness well and truly on the map attracting significant numbers of tourists to the seaside town. Sozzled or not, our spirited bather brings joy and amusement through her lighthearted antics on the sandy shores of Skegness. These are affordable Digital reproductions and are sent in high quality, durable cardboard tubes via royal Mail.A very rare poster of such an iconic holiday destination image 'The Jolly Fisherman' by John Hassall.

It was commissioned by the then Great Northern Railway to encourage visitors to use their service to take them on their seaside breaks to Skegness. An early member and later President of the London Sketch Club, he founded the New Art School (later the Hassall School of Art), which he ran for twenty years. The print been scaled for the best fit within the sheet and set within a white margin to assist with framing and mounting. There are different versions of the poster, however, the fisherman and the slogan are always part of the design; one such later design, promoted by the LNER, [note 1] showed the same fishermen design being tugged along the beach by a toddler hanging onto his scarf. It has been repeatedly reproduced, reworked and parodied, and the Jolly Fisherman, featured in the poster, has become an icon of his hometown, Skegness. In 1989 a Jolly Fisherman statue based on the figure featured on the famous poster was erected in Compass Gardens.
