Description

Mass Observation, a research programme aimed at curating a record of everyday life in Britain, had been launched in January 1937. Contributors across the country were invited to record the details of the day of the Coronation in a diary for the project, whether the events of the Coronation were part of this day for them or not. The same exercise was repeated every 12th May in following years, and again when Mass Observation was relaunched in 1981. It continues to be an annual initiative into the 2020s, open to anyone to contribute. [76] Commemorative rail services [ edit ]

Royalty in Essex: A Souvenir Book for Essex Children, Presented by the County Council of Essex on the Occasion of the Coronation of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, on June 2nd 1953 The first part of the service was the recognition, where the Archbishop of Canterbury called for those present to proclaim their recognition of the sovereign as their rightful king. The King was conducted by the Garter King of Arms to St Edward's Chair, and the Archbishop, as tradition dictates, asked: "Sirs, I here present unto you King George, your undoubted King: wherefore all you who are come this day to do your homage and service, are you willing to do the same?" The people replied loudly at each repetition "God save King George". The king then sat in the Chair of Estate and the regalia, except the swords, were laid on the altar. [38] The King then knelt before the altar and swore on the Bible his coronation oath, a copy of which he then signed. [38] The canopy being moved over the King in preparation for the anointing Albert and Elizabeth were married on 26 April 1923 in Westminster Abbey. Albert's marriage to someone not of royal birth was considered a modernising gesture. [37] The newly formed British Broadcasting Company wished to record and broadcast the event on radio, but the Abbey Chapter vetoed the idea (although the Dean, Herbert Edward Ryle, was in favour). [38] On the cover of Time, January 1925The Count of Flanders, the King's third cousin once removed (representing his brother, the King of the Belgians) King George V had severe reservations about Prince Edward, saying "After I am dead, the boy will ruin himself in twelve months" and "I pray God that my eldest son will never marry and that nothing will come between Bertie and Lilibet and the throne." [49] On 20 January 1936, George V died and Edward ascended the throne as King Edward VIII. In the Vigil of the Princes, Prince Albert and his three brothers (the new king, Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, and Prince George, Duke of Kent) took a shift standing guard over their father's body as it lay in state, in a closed casket, in Westminster Hall. Princess Juliana and Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, the King's fifth cousin and her husband (representing her mother, the Queen of the Netherlands)

The coronation service itself began once the procession into the abbey was over and the King and Queen were seated. Beginning with the recognition, the King then took an oath and was anointed by the Archbishop of Canterbury, before being crowned king. As a remnant of the coronation ceremony's feudal origins, the King then received homage from the peers and peeresses of the realm in attendance. I can only say my heart is very full when this evening I say – God bless & guide & keep your Majesties always. I felt that His Presence was around you this morning – His help assured to you in the Sacraments of Anointing and Communion. He will not fail you in the days to come. Another stamp, issued by Swaziland. It is extraordinary to think that the Coronation took place nearly seventy years ago. Most people will only know it through films or television. It was arranged to take place more than a year after the Queen’s accession. It is an important rite of passage in affirming a new monarch in their role.

The coronation was capitalised on by manufacturers as a means of selling commemorative material. Recordings of the service were put up for sale, while glassware and pottery were also made to commemorate the event. [78] In Canada, for instance, at least five cookbooks were printed to mark the Coronation. [79] The Coronation Review of the Fleet [ edit ] The Coronation of H. M. King George VI and H. M.
