MediHoney dressings are safe, effective and versatile to use on a variety of wounds and are indicated for use on: Robson, V., Dodd, S and Thomas, S. Standardized antibacterial honey (MediHoney®) with standard therapy in wound care: randomized clinical trial. Journal of Advanced Nursing, 2009: p. 565-575. This gels unique properties helps to provide broad spectrum antimicrobial activity, creating an antibacterial barrier, and creates a favorable environment to support wound healing. Also helps reduce malodours. Recent Advances: The past and present clinical use of honey is noted, focusing specifically on burns and ulcers, as these are the most common applications of the natural agent. While honey is often used without modification clinically, there are also commercially available products ranging from dressings to gels, which are discussed. MediHoney Paste dressings with 100% Active Leptospermum Honey is ideal for use in hard to dress wounds areas such as tunneled wounds, sinus wounds and wounds with undermining. The MediHoney Paste dressing has the ability to seep down into areas of the wound you may not be able to reach with other dressings.

Cover the MEDIHONEY gel, paste, or alginate dressing with an absorbent sterile, secondary bandage or a compression garment. The use of honey in wound care first began with the application of 80–100% Manuka honey and a gelling agent, but its high osmolarity would cause it to absorb the wound exudate, causing the honey to leak out of the wound bed. 41 The solution to this problem was to incorporate honey into scaffolds to provide a vehicle for controllable release such that wound exudate absorption is maintained. 42 The most common types of honey-infused scaffolds currently being researched are electrospun fibers, hydrogels, and cryogels. Medihoney Wound Gel can be left on the skin for up to 7 day dependent on wound fluid. Change dressings as required or after 7 days, whichever is sooner. Remaining waxy layer should be washed away whenever dressings are changed.Yes. Due to the osmotic potential there can be an increase in exudate and wound fluid to the wound area. Applying a skin protectant to the surrounding skin will help to prepare and protect the area from excess moisture and fluid. If you care for a loved one with underlying health problems like diabetes or venous insufficiency, MEDIHONEY can reduce the risk of infections, support the removal of necrotic tissue, and encourage the body’s natural wound healing process. Unlike regular honey, MediHoney is controlled against a rigorous set of systems and standards, including independent monitoring and auditing, to guarantee quality and batch-to-batch consistency. It is also ultra-filtrated and sterilized by gamma irradiation, removing any bacterial spores without loss of product effectiveness. 3 MediHoney comes from a traceable source and is free of pesticides and antibiotics. 3 Medihoney was applied clinically in a patient with an (a) ankle ulcer infected with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. Following application, partial closure was observed at (b) 2 weeks, with complete closure and irradiation of the bacteria observed at (c) 4 weeks. Reproduced with permission from Biglari et al. 38

Thoroughly clean the wound with a saline solution. (Here’s a recipe from IntermountainHealthcare). Then, if necessary, apply a barrier cream around the edges of the wound. Barrier cream prevents skin breakdown and infection. MEDIHONEY comes in a variety of formulations, including gels, wound pastes, calcium alginate dressings, and calcium alginate dressing ropes. Let’s take a closer look at each product’s treatment indications:Keep in mind that it’s best that MEDIHONEY be on the skin for 12-24 hours at a time for maximum effectiveness. If you or your loved one is having a hard time keeping the dressing intact, soak a gauze dressing in the MEDIHONEY (or use the MEDIHONEY square dressing) and apply it directly on the wound, then top with an abdominal pad dressing. When using MEDIHONEY will I need any extra supplies? Pressure ulcers are localized tissue injuries that are exposed to prolonged pressure, restricting blood flow into the area and causing tissue damage and tissue necrosis. Reperfusion of blood to the wound causes cellular edema, further tissue damage, and overproduction of ROS, causing further tissue damage. 28 If unrelieved, the affected area initially increases in redness, followed by a blister, open sore, and finally a deep crater. An ideal bioactive scaffold will allow for increased tissue regeneration by debriding of the necrotic tissue, preventing infection, and aiding in new tissue formation. 29 Honey is a favorable option due to its antimicrobial activity, deodorizing ability, debridement, osmotic effect, anti-inflammatory, antioxidative, and enhanced rate of healing. However, clinical confirmation has proven difficult due to the “low quality of evidence.” 4, 30 Medihoney Antibacterial Wound Gel 10g is formulated with medical grade manuka honey to help cleans and support the healing process of chronic and acute wounds.

Cutting KF. Honey and contemporary wound care: An overview. Ostomy Wound Manage. 2007;53(11):49–54. If negative reaction occurs, apart from a short-term stinging during application, remove immediately. Claude Stratford and Alan Bougen established their Paengaroa company in 1974 with a commitment to help people maintain good health. Their original vision of people living healthy lives through a connection to pure natural products still holds firm today. Comvita is one of New Zealand's major producers of high-quality Manuka Honey and honey products. Due to the dressing’s low pH, some patients may notice a slight transient stinging. If stinging persists and cannot be managed with an analgesic, remove dressing, cleanse area, and discontinue the use of MediHoney dressing. Burns often require both excision and skin grafting; however, infections are often caused by pathogens such as Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Acinetobacter baumannii, and Klebsiella pneumoniae. 3 As an alternative to skin grafts, the current gold standard of treatment involves a dressing typically composed of paraffin-impregnated gauze with a layer of cotton wool. The two layers prevent the wound from adhering to the dressing and absorb wound exudate, respectively. Additionally, the use of silver sulfadiazine has become increasingly common for preventing infection. Infection prevention often relies on a high osmolarity to both prevent bacterial growth and encourage wound healing. 23 Thus, honey has been identified as a potential alternative.Note that the honey led to the formation of healthy granulation tissue and expediated healing, with 33 of the patients experiencing wound healing within 10 days. This prior approval to prescribe grants the doctor the Authority to prescribe the desired medicine and have it funded under the PBS. Serious wounds, such as some of those listed above, should be managed under professional medical supervision. Prescriptions must be written on an Authority Prescription Form, and the approval number must be noted on the prescription. Pharmacists cannot dispense the item as a pharmaceutical benefit unless it has been approved by Medicare Australia (indicated by the presence of the approval number).
