In 2005, Ligonier Ministries self-published a minor revision to the Reformation Study Bible, now using the Bible text of the English Standard Version. [2] [3] The Protestant Reformation involved a rediscovery of the doctrine of justification by faith alone. Though the Reformers labored for the defense and propagation of other important biblical truths—in contrast to the perversion of the Roman Catholic Church—matters of soteriology lay at the center of their contentions with their Roman Catholic counterparts. Commonly attributed to Martin Luther, the saying articulus iustificationis dicitur articulus stantis et cadentis ecclesiae (justification is the article on which the church stands or falls) captures the essence of the Reformation’s defense of this central doctrine. In late 2021, Reformation Trust retired use of the NKJV, fully adopting the ESV as its Bible text of choice.

In this volume for children, Simonetta Carr tells the compelling story of Martin Luther, the monk who wrote ninety-five questions hoping to start a discussion about sin and repentance. The book traces Luther’s quest for peace with God, his lifelong heroic stand for God’s truth, his family life, and his numerous accomplishments. The Reformer’s greatest accomplishment, Carr writes, was “his uncompromising emphasis on the free promise of the gospel.” Scofield worked his dispensationalism into every text he could, promoting an unhealthy understanding of the gospel. Consider his note on John 1:17 that teaches salvation was not by grace prior to Christ: As a dispensation, grace begins with the death and resurrection of Christ. The point of testing is no longer legal obedience as the condition of salvation, but acceptance or rejection of Christ, with good works as a fruit of salvation.People new to Reformed theology may wonder why a five-hundred-year-old historical movement still affects our thinking so much today. In this teaching series, join Dr. Stephen J. Nichols for “Reformation 101” as he explores the events of the Protestant Reformation from the perspective of important figures from four key countries.

Power your study with the thoroughly revised and updated 2015 edition of the Reformation Study Bible—one of today’s most respected resources for personal Bible study. The Reformation Study Bible emphasizes the need for God’s grace to lead us out of darkness and into the light of Scripture, now aiding readers with 44% more commentary than the original edition—20,000 new, revised, or expanded study notes and 1.1 million total words of commentary. The mountain of study Bibles keeps growing, but not all growth is necessarily a good thing. The intention of a study Bible is to promote Bible study. Study notes and resources that lead us away from ourselves and our own understanding and toward the biblical text are helpful. When we can’t see the text for the notes, study Bibles are not only unhelpful, but they become barriers to our discipleship, leading us down destructive paths. As in all other things, we must be discerning. We must follow only the trustworthy voices. The Geneva Bible was the first English Bible to use verse divisions, thanks to the work of Robertus Stephanus. Prior editions of the English Bible had chapter breaks only. Stephanus, a brilliant linguist, published several editions of the Greek New Testament. He introduced his innovative verse divisions in his 1551 edition. Nine years later, these same verse numbers appeared in the Geneva Bible. The Reformation Study Bible is carefully crafted to equip Christians for a lifetime of in-depth Bible study as they seek to know God’s truth and live for His glory. This landmark resource, edited by Dr. R.C. Sproul with commentary from seventy-five distinguished theologians, is available in a variety of formats to serve your specific study needs. Knowing the unique features of each edition can help you decide which can best suit you or someone you know.
