Description

Unlike Manduhai, Daenerys compromised in political marriages. The first to Drogo was, at the start, none of her choosing. Another to Hizdhar zo Loraq proved a mistake. She abandoned Daario, a man who loved her unconditionally, for political opportunity. She placed her heart in Jon’s hands; he betrayed and killed her. This tale tells of a skilled man known as “Hunter-Boy”. This successful orphaned hunter was going about his business one day when, from above, he hears a cry for help coming from a thin white snake in the talons of a hawk. Full of empathy, he shoots the hawk down with an arrow, saving the snake. This snake happens to be the daughter of the Dragon King and she says to Hunter-Boy: The Secret History of the Mongols: A Mongolian Epic Chronicle of the Thirteenth Century, Igor de Rachewiltz, University of Wisconsin (2015)

In the same spirit that Temujin had sought to transform the culture of Mongol leadership and forge an empire based on meritocracy, so did Manduhai restore the disunited Mongols. Chengis had dissolved clan divisions and replaced them with a unified Mongolia. Manduhai dissolved the separate Borijin lines and molded them into one. It is true of the UlusMongol as it is of everything, that men of little value make the histories while greater men go forgotten. It is true of Game of Thrones just as well.ETHIOPIAN DRAGON (Drakon Aithiopikos) – Giant Serpent of Greek & Roman Legend". Archived from the original on 18 August 2016 . Retrieved 30 December 2016. is ending, but the year witnessed several major archaeological discoveries in Mongolia which one of them is selected as TOP 10 DISCOVERIES OF 2019 by Archaeology Magazine of Archaeological Institute of America. A jade belt hook, wooden cups, a leather horse harness, chariots, weapons, and household utensils were also recovered from the tomb.Chinese archaeologists said the two gilded silver dragons not only testify to the cultural exchange and interaction between the prairie in the north and central China, but also indicate that the owner of the tomb had a high status in Mongol society. Chengis’ life was shaped by women, by his wife Borte and his mother Hoelun. He had gone to war for Borte, in defiance of all tradition, and he strived to balance the Mountain and the River—the male and female elements that, when combined, formed the strongest bond under the blue sky according to Mongolian spiritual belief. Manufacturing chain mail or plate armor required high-intensity work methods and permanent buildings that were not feasible under nomadic conditions.Archaeologists in Chifeng, Inner Mongolia, have unearthed an ancient dragon crafted from mussel shells. The discovery has been associated with the Hongshan Culture, a Neolithic civilization that thrived in Northeast China’s West Liao River Basin from 4700 to 2900 BCE. Credit: Inner Mongolia Institute of Cultural Relics and Archaeology In her book The First Fossil Hunters: Dinosaurs, Mammoths, and Myth in Greek and Roman Times (2000), Adrienne Mayor argues that some stories of dragons may have been inspired by ancient discoveries of fossils belonging to dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals. [19] She argues that the dragon lore of northern India may have been inspired by "observations of oversized, extraordinary bones in the fossilbeds of the Siwalik Hills below the Himalayas" [20] and that ancient Greek artistic depictions of the Monster of Troy may have been influenced by fossils of Samotherium, an extinct species of giraffe whose fossils are common in the Mediterranean region. [20] In China, a region where fossils of large prehistoric animals are common, these remains are frequently identified as "dragon bones" [21] and are commonly used in traditional Chinese medicine. [21] Mayor, however, is careful to point out that not all stories of dragons and giants are inspired by fossils [21] and notes that Scandinavia has many stories of dragons and sea monsters, but has long "been considered barren of large fossils." [21] In one of her later books, she states that, "Many dragon images around the world were based on folk knowledge or exaggerations of living reptiles, such as Komodo dragons, Gila monsters, iguanas, alligators, or, in California, alligator lizards, though this still fails to account for the Scandinavian legends, as no such animals (historical or otherwise) have ever been found in this region." [22] Daario was the only one who understood the true flame within Daenerys, and just as a Khan who can’t ride is no Khan, told her “a dragon queen with no dragons is not a queen”. Mongolian folk religion, Tengerism or Shamanism, includes some mention of dragons. The Tolin Center for Healing & Tengrism Studies notes:

It would have been unimaginable to erase Visenya and Rhaenys Targaryen, Aegon’s sister-wives, from the histories. Women without whom Aegon could not have conquered Westeros, their symbolic value is too grand…but generations later, the legacy of female Targaryens had dwindled, and Daenerys is seen as merely an attractive pawn to be sold to the highest bidder, as happened eventually to the Borijin princesses. The dragon is consered the king of the water, and if we disrespect the spirit and king of the water we can then get what in Mongolian we call “dragon illnesses,” which are a consequence of disresprecting the sacredness of water. The goal of Ancient Origins is to highlight recent archaeological discoveries, peer-reviewed academic research and evidence, as well as offering alternative viewpoints and explanations of science, archaeology, mythology, religion and history around the globe. Would Daario wander into the smoldering remnants of Valyria to die among the Stone Men? Give in to the drink, and fight to an unremarkable end in the pits?

Swaddling, Judith (1989), The Ancient Olympic Games, London, England: British Museum Press, ISBN 0-292-77751-5 The dragon’s mouth is short and wide, and a pierced circular hole serves as its eye, located beneath the forehead. Four additional circular holes at the tail’s base suggest the possibility of connecting the dragon’s parts using a string threaded through these openings. Chain mail’s high price, cumbersome size, and challenging maintenance history made it a well-known but uncommon kind of armor for the Mongols. The elite of the Mongol army were mounted archers who needed armor that would not restrict their movement while riding.Sproul, Barbara C. (1979). Primal Myths. HarperOne HarperCollinsPublishers. ISBN 978-0-06-067501-1. Japanese dragon myths amalgamate native legends with imported stories about dragons from China. Like some other dragons, most Japanese dragons are water deities associated with rainfall and bodies of water, and are typically depicted as large, wingless, serpentine creatures with clawed feet. Gould writes (1896:248), [80] the Japanese dragon is "invariably figured as possessing three claws". A story about the samurai Minamoto no Mitsunaka tells that, while he was hunting in his own territory of Settsu, he dreamt under a tree and had a dream in which a beautiful woman appeared to him and begged him to save her land from a giant serpent which was defiling it. [64] Mitsunaka agreed to help and the maiden gave him a magnificent horse. [64] When he woke up, the seahorse was standing before him. [64] He rode it to the Sumiyoshi temple, where he prayed for eight days. [64] Then he confronted the serpent and slew it with an arrow. [64]
