Description

Antonianism ( Portuguese: antonianismo) was a syncretic Bakongo Catholic movement formed in the Kingdom of Kongo between 1704 and 1708 as a development out of the Roman Catholic Church in Kongo, yet without denying the authority of the Pope. Its founder was a young charismatic woman named Beatriz Kimpa Vita who said she was possessed by Saint Anthony of Padua. [28] [29] Beatriz became known for healing and other miracles. It was eventually suppressed by King Pedro IV of Kongo, and Dona Beatriz was burned at the stake as a heretic. [30] In art [ edit ] After all, we had tasked him for generations with intentions great and small, and never once had he failed to intercede. Morosini, Sergio Rossetti (March 1999). Since I was 16 years old I prayed a special novena prayer to St. Anthony every night, asking him to find me find my future spouse. It took a while, and I had many doubts that it would ever happen, but after 9 years I met the man I was meant to marry. We have been blessed with 7 years of marriage now. As it happens, my husband is of Italian heritage and his last name means "follower of St. Anthony". If that's not intercession I don't know what is! - Anne A new heart Padua, Italy is a short distance west of Venice. At the time of Anthony, it was one of the most important cities in the country, with an important university for the study of civil and canon law. Sometimes Anthony left Padua for greater solitude. He went to a place loved by Francis—LaVerna, where Francis received the wounds of Jesus. He also found a grotto near the friary where he could pray in solitude.

Still another story says that in 1647 Father Erastius Villani of Padua was returning by ship to Italy from Amsterdam. The ship with its crew and passengers was caught in a violent storm. All seemed doomed. Father Erastius encouraged everyone to pray to St. Anthony. Then he threw some pieces of cloth that had touched a relic of St. Anthony into the heaving seas. At once, the storm ended, the winds stopped and the sea became calm. Teacher, Preacher, Doctor of the ScripturesSt. Anthony of Padua is one of the most popular and beloved saints in the Church—and surely one of the busiest! As I dumped them into the garbage bag, I saw something glimmer. With a surge of astonishment and anticipation, I emptied the garbage bag out on the floor of the closet. This Psalter, or book of Psalms, was his particular favorite because he had copied it by hand, and notated it extensively for his teaching and preaching. Archived from the original on 11 January 2014. When I was 13, I had a rosary ring from Monte Cassino Abbey in Italy. I loved that rosary ring; I loved how I could pray the rosary anywhere and have it be subtle, unnoticeable. I wore it all the time. Problem was, I had a bad habit of losing it. I would lose it for days and weeks at a time, to my great worry. My friend recommended I ask St Anthony to pray for me, and so that's just what I started doing. Whenever I lost the ring, I'd ask St Anthony to pray for me, and he'd always find it within a day or two. But one day, during my sophomore year of high school, I lost it at the school's dunk tank fundraiser. Sadly, I never found the ring. But, as my mom said, "St. Anthony had been finding your ring for too long - I think he's done looking for it!" I never found the ring, but I thank St. Anthony for interceding for me those hundreds of times. - Monique Lost joy

Anthony’s superior, St. Francis, was cautious about education such as his protégé possessed. He had seen too many theologians taking pride in their sophisticated knowledge. Still, if the friars had to hit the roads and preach to all sorts of people, they needed a firm grounding in Scripture and theology. So, when he heard the glowing report of Anthony’s debut at the ordinations, Francis wrote in 1224, “It pleases me that you should teach the friars sacred theology, provided that in such studies they do not destroy the spirit of holy prayer and devotedness, as contained in the Rule.” Merlika, Eugjen (13 June 2015). But, as often happens, the gift he wanted to give was not the gift that was to be asked of him. He became seriously ill, and after several months realized he had to go home. Purcell, Mary (1960). First, there is the very real fact of Anthony’s own travels in preaching the gospel, particularly his journey and mission to preach the gospel in Morocco, a mission cut short by severe illness. But after his recovery and return to Europe, he was a man always on the go, heralding the Good News.
