VR, Focal Length: 36mm, Focus Mode: AF-A, AF-Area Mode: Auto, VR: ON, Aperture: f/5, Shutter Speed: 1/60s, Exposure Mode: Aperture Priority, Exposure Comp. As always, our studio tests are backed up by taking hundreds of photographs with the lens across a range of subjects, and examining them in detail. It perfoms best in the middle of its range, with a distinct drop in preformance towards the telephoto end, as is common with lenses of this type. Is the extra optical oomph worth the upgrade over the iPhone 15 Pro’s 3x (77mm equivalent) telephoto?

Oddly, no mention of magic ED glass, but Nikon still rates the sharpness as the same to slightly better than the 18-55mm II ED.An aspherical lens element minimises spherical aberration and other forms of distortion, while ensuring high resolution and contrast.

Compared to the previous generation of ultrasonic engines (Silent Wave Motor, or SWM, referred to as “AF-S”), the new stepping motor technology (abbreviation for auto-focus pulsing, referred to as the “AF-P”) is faster and quieter. The optical design features two aspherical elements for better sharpness and chromatic aberration control. They are particularly useful in correcting distortion in wide-angle lenses and help contribute to a lighter, more compact design by reducing the number of standard (spherical) elements necessary. But this chunky yet competent backpack doesn't have a killer feature or look that makes it stand out from some pretty tough competition. Reproduction in whole or part in any form or medium without specific written permission is prohibited. As with Canon's 18-55mm IS upgrade, there are rather more changes from the previous Nikon 18-55mm than at first meet the eye. They are also sold as standalone products, and hence they are some of the most used lenses in the Nikon line-up. No switches; VR and AF/MF now controlled in camera menus (but you can just grab the ring any time for instant manual-focus override). zoom range covers the highly versatile 18–55mm focal length range, great for everything from wide group shots and landscapes to family sports and portraits, even in dim lighting.
