Stevia. If you want tooth-friendly sweetness, stevia is a good choice. Choose powdered extract, powdered stevia leaf, or a plain or flavored liquid stevia extract. A foaming agent that has been linked to skin irritation, canker sores and even interference with the way your taste buds function. “SLS” has also been known to be contaminated with known carcinogens like ethylene oxide and 1,4-dioxane which may cause cancer in humans. Triclosan

Did you know that you can make your own coconut oil toothpaste with just a few simple ingredients that you have in your kitchen? Bentonite clay is naturally cleansing and will bind to toxins and acidic materials in the mouth. It is often used in tooth powder recipes and is known to potentially help remineralize teeth. Baking soda aids in cleaning and coconut oil adds antibacterial and anti-fungal properties to this tooth scrub. Add a few drops of naturally antimicrobial peppermint essential oil and you have a super germ fighting tooth scrub that doesn’t taste so bad…. once you get used to it! In addition, the study showed that sesame oil and olive oil were effective in reducing mouth bacteria as well. For more information read my article on how to treat gum infection (gingivitis). This all-natural homemade toothpaste recipe is made with just four simple ingredients that are good for both your body and your bank account! Once I started experimenting with a homemade toothpaste recipe, I was pleasantly surprised to find out how few ingredients I actually needed. My recipe has 4 ingredients, with an optional 5th if you add in activated charcoal. Not only is this recipe simple, it contains only plant based ingredients that are common. No weird chemical compounds or additives here!A lot of toothpastes contain foaming agents . Ingredients like lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, and sodium lauryl ether sulfate (quite the mouthful) can influence your taste buds. This is why you may taste food as bitter after you brush your teeth. 2. Fights Bacteria and Cavities Baking soda makes this recipe taste a little bit on the salty side (it IS sodium bicarbonate, after all) but the essential oils should help mask this saltiness slightly. If the saltiness bothers you, try adding a bit more essential oils and/or drop the baking soda amount down to 3 tablespoons. I've found that our kids were not a huge fan of the saltiness at first but easily got used to it after a few days. Now they love the taste of this toothpaste! Coconut oil is a natural oil found in coconut palm fruit. It’s edible, and it has a lot of benefits on your skin, in your cooking, and even on your teeth. Some studies claim that coconut oil helps with weight loss , others even tried to connect it to Alzheimer’s disease .

At the same time, what goes on the surface of our teeth does impact their health somewhat as well. I designed this DIY remineralizing toothpaste with this in mind. There are lots of lots of calcium for healthy enamel.

Fluoride is another common chemical in conventional toothpaste. Fluoride is a toxic industrial waste product that is a poison to your body even in trace amounts… Once coconut oil is melted, add the baking soda and Stevia and stir well to combine. Finally, add up to 40 drops of essential oils (I like to add 20 drops of clove oil and 20 drops of either cinnamon or peppermint). You can use less essential oils (or none at all if you don’t mind having a bland toothpaste), but the oils do add a nice flavour, like you’d expect from a store-bought toothpaste, and they also have some of their own health benefits, which I’ll go over below.
