The lights you've linked to look good - expensive though per light? What do people use when they wire in 'standard gu10 leds' to replace halogens - do they use a LED specific transformer? Unlike the 7W DR450 and the 10W Philips Master LEDs, the Lucci LEDlux 6W LED does not 'simulate' the load The high frequency switching cycles are seen to stop and resume at irregular times within the 100 Hz wave envelope. and a bridge rectifier composed of diodes to deliver DC to the LEDs from the AC transformer supply. Hi Bill, replacing with GU10’s is 100% what we would suggest. The transformers make replacing MR16 a bit of a pain – especially given each bulb has its own one. Beauty Advent calendars are significantly pricier than chocolate ones, but they've become increasingly popular in the last few years as a way of bagging beauty products at a fraction of the normal cost. They often sell out early, but can also be heavily discounted later if they don't, so here's a round-up of some of the best I’ve seen. The first number gives the protection level against solid objects from 0-6 with 6 the best protection (i.e. no dust or anything would enter the device).

Switching to LED - which bulbs require a transformer?

Not sure if your still thinking of changing to LED's but These are the mains voltage equivalent of MR16 with your existing installation. The likelihood of compatibility between a 12V LED light and a 12VAC halogen transformer depends on a few factors: I guess an alternative would be to fit new GU10 lamp holders with LED bulbs and ditch the transformers. Do you think thy is would be a better approach?

Halogen spotlights normally run at 50watts while their LED cousins run at just 5watts. Therefore it is certainly worth replacing them since you can produce massive savings on your electricity bills by doing so. >>> Find out how much you could save by making the switch <<< Bulbs that operate on a lower voltage than 230-240V must be used with a compatible transformer when installing on UK mains circuits. The transformer converts mains voltage to a lower voltage suitable for the bulbs, ensuring they function as designed and preventing damage to the bulbs and/or light fittings. Most people tend to focus on wattage when it comes to measuring the brightness they need. However, it’s slightly different for LED bulbs. Firstly, the true brightness of LED bulbs is measured in lumens. For instance, a 4w MR16 LED spotlight which has 320 lumens produces a comparable brightness to 50w standard light. It just consumes a tenth of the energy. It’s also worth noting how beam angle effects brightness. A narrower beam angle (of 45° or less) produces a more concentrated, and thus brighter, light. A wider beam angle will spread the light and create a more subtle glow. I have these transformers which have been attached since 2000, see photo below, can you please advise if I have made a mistake in choosing the correct bulbs for the job? The reason for describing the transformer as a ’driver’ in relation to domestic LED bulbs is that although the term ‘LED transformer’ has become a popular umbrella term for all drivers and transformers, the term ‘transformer’ should be reserved for larger LED lighting projects requiring a more powerful external supply (see below for further details). What is the difference between an LED ‘driver’ and an LED ‘transformer’?

These numbers tell you the maximum wattage that the transformer can carry. For example, a 40VA transformer can handle up to a 40-watt halogen light bulb, while a 10-60VA one can carry between 10 and 60 watts worth of bulbs. Some transformers might just carry one individual light bulb, while others might be able to carry several lower wattage light bulbs in a series. The LED light bulbs we sell operate on a UK standard 240V AC, and the light bulbs have a built-in transformer to change this 240V to the LED required voltage. I'd place the transformer centrally to keep the LV cable runs short - the longest would need to be about 1.5m. Turbo boost your credit chances and get your free Experian credit report. rememberong all the time that SMPS ( aka "electronic transformers" ) described as having an AC output maybe producing AC at a frequency much higher than 50 Hz. You may have bought or are thinking about buying some LED strip lighting or MR16 fittings or spotlights for your home. Either way you’re here to find out the whats and whys about LED drivers (or transformers). This handy guide will help you make an informed decision and give you the fundamentals you need when buying a driver. Why do I need an LED driver? Anyone know the answer to this ?……My lights are 12 volt……20 Watt max…….Halogen…With transformer….. There are 4 lights…… 20w bulb in each one……MR16….GU5.3…. 50mm wide by 45mm depth The first thing you need to do is determine the existing type of transformer you have in your MR16 circuit. This will most likely be situated up in the roof above the light fittings – now in some circuits there is one transformer, but sometimes every individual light fitting has its own transformer. They tend to come in two varieties; the first is the older wire-wound magnetic transformers and the second is the newer electronic low-voltage transformer. Both work by stepping down the mains voltage (240v) to 12 volts, which allows the bulbs to function.

load input of the wirewound transformer can be seen to be a simple 50 Hz sine wave. In contrast, the electronic Often extra low voltage (12 volt) is wired with twin core, it says "A circuit protective conductor shall be run to and terminated at each point in wiring and at each accessory except a lampholder having no exposed-conductive-parts and suspended from such a point." in the main MR16 lamps are not suspended so need and earth taking to lamp even if not used.

If you’re switching to LED MR16s from halogen MR16s, then LED drivers are pretty important. They’re used to power low voltage (12v) LED bulbs and strip lighting, providing a constant current to make sure they work properly. They’re mainly used for strip lighting, and MR16, MR11 and G4 spotlight bulbs. In some cases your existing (normal) 12v transformer will work. However, this can reduce the lifespan of the bulb. All mains powered LED bulbs require a transformer. Depending on the bulb type, the transformer/driver may be built in to the bulb casing or may be located externally. The purpose of the transformer is to reduce mains voltage (240V) to the desired level relative to the bulb being powered (e.g. 12V or 24V). Switching to LED - which bulbs require a transformer?

have additional modules that intentionally alter the load seen by the transformer to better replicate the load characteristics of 12VAC halogens and thus ensure broader (but not Some G5.3 bulbs are DC and some are AC and some it does not matter, most sold on high street it does not matter, but some are marked 50 Hz, so fitting a DC power supply often called a driver, is not always best option. You may run into problems with this transformer, as it is designed for use with Halogen light bulbs and therefore has a wattage range of 20W to 60W.
