Description

The HP beans had a distinctive tangy flavour which I quite enjoyed, thanks to the vinegar in the recipe. The flavour wasn't overwhelming and to me tasted much more like my idea of a classic baked bean, rather than the sweeter versions I had tried. I was surprised that the beans themselves were quite soft, even before cooking. Personally, I prefer a more solid bean to avoid the catastrophic bean mush when cooking, so these were a little on the soft side for me. At 45p per tin, Aldi is certainly maintaining its reputation for affordability when it comes to beans. Another tin, another promise of "rich tomato sauce", this time, I felt this was partly true.

And while, like many foods, the cost of a can of beans has risen over the past year, our supermarket winners remain modestly priced. The cheapest Best Buy cost just 50p a tin. Soak the beans overnight in a pot of water. Make sure the beans are covered by at least a couple of inches of water. Drain the beans and put them in a pot of water. Bring to a boil and simmer for 1 hour. Drain and reserved the bean liquid. Which? asked a panel of consumers to blind-taste and rate 12 different brands of baked beans, from Heinz, Branston and KP to Aldi, Tesco, Lidl and more. In a large pot or Dutch oven fry the bacon until crispy then add the onions and cook until soft and translucent, 5-7 minutes. Add the garlic and cook for another minute. Last on the list is Aldi. This supermarket has long been known as the enemy of the so-called "brand snobs" but over the years has managed to convert some shoppers thanks to its low prices.

Lidl Newgate baked beans were a joint-top choice for our panel, scoring highly for their appearance, smell and texture. As they are a fixture of most UK households, we decided to put several supermarkets' offerings to the test, and it was no easy task. I tried nine tins of baked beans over the course of several days, which had an impressive combined weight of more than 2.4kg. HP Baked Beans in a Rich Tomato Sauce - 73%. Ok for aroma and flavour, but below average on appearance. Almost half found the sauce too thin. 55p for 415g tin. Available from Asda. Natalie Hitchins, Which? head of home products and services said: "Yet again, our taste tests have shown that supermarket own branded products can more than hold their own against pricier brands. Our consumer panel blind-tasted baked beans from Branston, Heinz and HP, plus eight supermarket options from Asda, Sainsbury's, Tesco and more.

Most baked bean brands have low-sugar/low-salt versions, so you may want to give them a try if you're watching your intake. We only included standard versions in our taste test to ensure products were comparable. While we are clearly obsessed with this beloved comfort food, many would argue there's not much that can beat a generous serving of beans on toast. This classic dish feels like home, stirring childhood memories of inhaling the dish in record time and inevitably spilling bean juice down your jumper in the process. Next up was Aldi's Corale Baked Beans (45p/420g), with a score of 75%, which were declared the best value, with Which? saying: "Top marks for their appetising colour and texture. Although they didn't quite match up to Asda's beans on flavour, they're still a tasty option. These are the joint cheapest on test and offer excellent value for money." Pour three and a half litres of cold water into a large bowl or pan, stir in the salt to dissolve, then add the beans; contrary to received wisdom, adding salt to uncooked beans does not make them tough, but instead helps them go extra creamy. Leave them to soak at room temperature for between eight and 12 hours. 3 Drain and cook the beans

Sainsbury's Baked Beans - 71%. Average marks for most categories, and cheaper than most. 42% of tasters found the beans too hard. 35p for 400g tin. Available from Sainsbury's.

GlobalData

Beans no longer has to mean Heinz for cost-conscious shoppers, who preferred supermarket brands - some costing much less than half the price - to the market leader. M&S Baked Beans - 64%. These M&S beans underwhelmed out tasters. Over half found the sauce too thin and the beans overly hard. 35p for 400g tin. Available from M&S (in store) or Ocado. For more on making great-value choices at the supermarket, whether it's frozen fish, instant coffee or plant-based alternatives, head to our regularly updated guide to the best food and drink . Aldi Corale Baked beans - 76%. One of the cheapest tins we tested. Our panel were fans of the appearance and smell of the beans, but a quarter thought they weren't sweet enough. 30p for 420g tin (7p per 100g). Available from Aldi. Competition for the top spots was very tight, with several other budget-friendly supermarket beans coming in just behind our Best Buys.

Co-op Baked Beans - 71%. Over half of tasters found the sauce flavour too weak, and average elsewhere. 36p for 400g tin. Available from Co-op. The size of the tins are the same but the weights of the beans we tested ranged from 400g up to 420g. NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland (RBS) and Ulster Bank, which are all part of the NatWest Group, will now shut at least 172 of their bank branches in 2023 and 2024. Unfortunately, Co-op's beans didn't quite hit the mark for me. Once again, I found the texture a little soft and the sauce quite runny - a theme which appeared among many of the cheaper supermarket own-brand versions.

M&S Baked Beans (50/400g) – 73% Which? said:"These beans are pretty good across the board, although 38% found the texture of the sauce too thin." Personally, I prefer my beans to have a stronger tomato flavour, but they were still quite tasty. They didn't blow my mind and make me realise what I've been missing all these years, but the flavour was decent and the small tin would make for handy lunch. The baked beans were assessed in February 2023 by a large panel of consumers who regularly buy and consume baked beans. Cheap Lidl and Morrisons baked beans took the top spot in our test, tying for first place and seeing off competition from the big brands. Heinz, the market leader in the baked beans category, told just-food that since acquiring HP its first move will be to relaunch HP Baked Beans to the convenience and impulse category.
