About this deal

SB Plant Invigorator, Growing Success Fungus Stop, RHS Bug and Mildew Control, Ecofective Bug & Mildew Control and the Ecofective ‘Defender’ range contain a blend of surfactants and nutrients and can be used on any edible or ornamental plants, with no harvest interval. They have a physical mode of action and may be used against powdery mildews, as well as a range of pests such as whiteflies, aphids, spider mites, mealybugs, scale insects and psyllids. They are unlikely to be effective against leaf spots. Sudden wilting and collapse of the whole plant can occur, or there can be a slower and more gradual decline Further information about the use of pesticides available for management of scale is available on the pesticides for gardeners leaflet Where you cannot tolerate scurfy rose scale, manage them using the information above as your first course of action.

Encourage predators in the garden, some ladybirds, parasitoid wasps and some birds will eat scale insects. The native kidney spot ladybird, Chilocorus renipustulatus, specialises in feeding on scale insects and can naturally coloniseaffectedplants reducing populations Powdery mildew: the powdery mildew fungus over-winters in the buds and when these start to growin the spring it produces airborne spores which spread the disease. The pathogen originated in north America, but is now present wherever vines are grown. Leaf infection reduces plant vigour. When fruits are infected they split as they expand and this allows secondary infection by grey mould ( Botrytis cinerea). Pesticide treatments are likely to kill natural enemies and so reduce the likelihood of natural control and can lead to resurgence of the target animal. Where you cannot tolerate codling moth, manage them using the information above as your first course of action. None of the products in the lists above are likely to have any activity against bacterial shothole.

Inclusion of a pesticide product does not indicate a recommendation or endorsement by RHS Gardening Advice. It is a list of products currently available to the home gardener. Galls should be removed promptly before the fungus sporulates (the white stage when the spores are released and the disease can spread)

Clean up and destroy fallen leaves to reduce the amount of the downy mildew pathogen surviving the winter Similar non-chemical control measures can help to prevent infection by leaf spot fungi, downy mildew and grey mould, which are all 'wet weather' diseases (see the 'biology' section, below): Downy mildewrequires cool wet weather for infection and spread. The 'fungal' growth seen on the underside of the leaves produces large numbers of asexual spores.Downy mildews are host-specific, so for example thedowny mildew affecting a Veronica will not infect a rose or vice versa.Prune shrubs to give an open structure (which will again improve air circulation and reduce humidity) Powdery mildew: the biology of powdery mildewis discussed in the web profile devoted to this group of diseases. Theproducts above also have recommendations for control of powdery mildew, as do products containing sulphur(Fungus Clear Ultra 2, Mildew Clear for Edibles, Roseclear 3-in-1 action (with fatty acids)). Adult females of this species mature in September or October, they are 5-7mm long dark brown and convex, immobile and attached to host plants stems. The adult male is winged and pinkish, at only 1.5 mm longit is rarely seen. Males die after mating but the females overwinter and produce white waxy egg masses in May or June. The egg masses are usually only found on stems and the wax can be pulled out in long threads; these characteristics distinguish this species from other insects that produce white waxy coverings such as cushion scale, fluted scale, horse chestnut scale, woolly aphidand mealybug.

Chooseless susceptible cultivars if downy mildew becomes a persistent problem. It is mainly a problem withbroad-leaved cultivarssuch as Veronica‘Midsummer Beauty’ and x ‘Franciscana Variegata’ but also occasionally present in some of the smaller-leavedspecies and cultivars,e.g . V. albicans, V. ‘Frozen Flame’ , V. rakiensis, V . ‘Youngii’ (syn. ‘Carl Teschner’) . Like that of most powdery mildews, the majority of the growth of rose powdery mildew is on the surface of the plant. This exposed growth makes it susceptible to a range of chemical control measures. Plant invigorators combine nutrients to stimulate plant growth with surfactants or fatty acids that have a physical mode of action (e.g. Ecofective Bug Control, RHS Bug and Mildew Control and SB Plant Invigorator). These are not considered organic. Powdery mildew or leaf spots: leaf removal is not recommended as it would cause severe defoliation. Unless very severe, these infections should be toleratedFurther information on the management of downy mildews, powdery mildews and grey mould can be found in the advice profiles on the links below: Ornamentals:The fungicides sulphur (Fungus Clear Ultra 2, Mildew Clear for Edibles), tebuconazole (Provanto Fungus Fighter Concentrate), tebuconazole with trifloxystrobin (Provanto Fungus Fighter Plus, Toprose Fungus Control & Protect), and triticonazole (Fungus Clear Ultra) are approved for the control of powdery mildewson ornamental plants. The best time for summer spraying is August to September when the more vulnerable newly hatched scale nymphs are present Scurfy rose scale can be difficult to control, replacing severely infested plants can be considered Little can be done by cultural means to prevent infections when conditions are suitable. Plants may sometimes'grow through' the problem, with new leaves being unaffected when growing conditions change so that they are less conducive for the diseases

Dobies strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. While the majority of our nursery plants cope well with slight delays in intransit, sadly, the time it takes to deliver to certain locations in the UK means that we can't guarantee this for some of our smaller plug products and tender bedding and vegetable lines, which do not respond well to the extra journey time. So regretfully while we offer the majority of our live plant offering nationwide, we are unable to ship plugs, begging plants and tender vegetable plants to the following areas: HS, IV41-IV49, IV51, IV55-56, KW15-KW17, PA34, PA41-48, PA60-PA78, PA80, PH40-PH44, TR21-TR24, ZE1-ZE3.For scales on deciduous plants including edible fruits, a plant oil winter wash (considered organic e.g. Growing Success Winter Tree Wash) can be used. This can control the overwintering scale nymphs in December-January when the plants are fully dormant The best time for summer spraying is in June when the more vulnerable newly hatched scale nymphs are present
