Description

The principal alternative for consideration was a version of the flag with the saltire of Saint Andrew lying on top of that of Saint George, called the "Scots union flag as said to be used by the Scots", but this was rejected. [ citation needed]

A yellow Hebridean Birlinn in upper hoist above a yellow Nordic Cross on a sky blue field interlaced with a white ring. It is unknown how this flag came to be. This design could not have been adopted before 17 September 1910, when South Africa was granted its coat of arms. Furthermore, this flag often featured different variants of each coat of arms depending on the time period in which it was printed. This can be seen in the arms of Canada changing after a new design was adopted in 1921. It is unknown why the Australian coat of arms originally used was never updated after being replaced in 1912, [8] but it did receive a change in colours not seen anywhere else. There also appears to have been a 1921 variant of the Empire flag that was unique to Australia. It featured a wreath of maple and oak leaves around the Canadian coat of arms, a much smaller Star of India, and an off-center Cross of Saint George. Additionally, the Canadian arms appear to be a design used from 1873 to 1907 due to the visible absence of Saskatchewan and Alberta. This variant of the flag was flown at the unveiling of the Dangarsleigh War Memorial in 1921. [4] Modern recreations of an Empire flag utilizing the arms of a post-1921 Canada and pre-1930 South Africa have been made, [9] but records of a design incorporating these elements together in the past do not appear to exist.A blue Nordic cross outlined in yellow on a red field. There was no doubt about the vastness of the potential, and there was agreement that opportunities were largely wasted because politically and constitutionally there was no unity, no common policies, no agreed central direction, no "permanent binding force" said Alfred Milner.
