Over the last few weeks, we have seen several new releases from Aputure: the updated amaran COB S Series LED Lights, the amaran PT1c, PT2c, and PT4c Pixel Tubes, the Aputure INFINIBAR LED Light System, and the long-awaited Aputure MC Pro Mini LED Panel Light. amaran 150c and 300c – overviewThe Amaran 150C and 300C are able to be remotely controlled by the Sidus Link app on your smartphone or tablet, offering the full range of capability, including adding the lights to your preset arrays for use in permanent setups in a single location. There’s no native DMX control, which is common on lights at this price, but it will be compatible with Aputure’s upcoming Sidus DMX system. In addition to their included AC Power Supplies, the amaran 150c and 300c lights are capable of running off DC power via battery solutions. Utilising their 48V DC power inputs, each fixture can be powered using two Gold or V-Mount batteries via the Aputure 2-Bay Battery Power Station (sold separately). The Aputure amaran Light Dome Mini SE is the first amaran Bowens Mount octabox soft light modifier. It has an eight-sided deep parabolic design with a reflective silver lining. The modifier promises to transform point-source fixtures like the amaran 150c and 300c into directional soft light sources. These new amaran lights enjoy a wide CCT range of 2,500K to 7,500K, allowing users the flexibility to light warm to daylight-balanced scenes without the need to gel or switch out lights to achieve various colour temperatures. Being Sidus Link compatible lights, the ability to change colour temperatures on the fly without ever needing to touch the fixture only further reinforces the 150c and 300c as truly versatile, all-in-one light sources. The amaran 150c and 300c also punch well above their weight classes, outputting 15,610 lux (5600K) and 26,580 lux (5600K) respectively using their included Hyper Reflectors.

With industry leading colour accuracy, the amaran 150c and 300c offers high scores in color metrics tests across the board. Both lights score an impressive SSI (Tungsten) rating of 83 and SSI (D56) rating of 71, putting them near the top of their respective product categories when it comes to true colour accuracy.

The 300c includes a 65-degree reflector, or you have a 90-degree beam angle if you remove the kit reflector and go with the “bare bulb.” That same included kit reflector on the 150c creates a 63-degree beam angle or an 83-degree beam angle if a reflector isn’t attached. Both fixtures use the ubiquitous Bowens S-Type mount, the advantage being that the mount opens up a wide range of available 1st and 3rd party accessories. Keep in mind that results may vary as accessory manufacturers have designed different accessories with various lights in mind — they won’t all be compatible despite using the Bowens S-Type. amaran 150c. It relates to the blue spike that people often mention about LED’s spectral power distributions. A lot of lights that only use a single blue light emitter will result in similar R12 values in the 70s to low 80s, depending on the color science, combination of chips, and the LED chips used.” Conclusion We have all experienced situations when lights start to produce a bothersome buzzing sound, which is annoying when you are shooting quiet scenes with actors. The two lights offer a new form factor for the company. It’s very different to everything they’ve released in the past. They’re a little bit bigger than the Amaran 100D and 200D to account for the extra electronics and power requirements – as well as the larger heatsink and fan – so they needed to be redesigned. This larger design, however, has its advantages. The larger fan means that it can spin more slowly to shift the same amount of air and keep the unit cool. And a slower fan means a quieter fan. However, you can not directly power the lights via an external V-Mount/Gold Mount battery. Sidus Link (the Bluetooth-based app commonly used to control amaran and Aputure wirelessly) is also compatible with fixtures using wireless DMX and LumenRadio built-in. So, the dividing line between amaran (no-DMX) and Aputure (yes-DMX) is a bit grayer these days, and that’s fine by me. amaran products also tend to rely more on plastic components than metal in the case of Aputure.
