At the moment, I find this hard to read, as I wanted to look up to her as a feminist icon, and I fundamentally disagree with a lot of her actions, and hypocrisies. Yes, she wears her heart on her sleeve, in a working environment which doesn't really accept that sort of thing, and I respect her for it.

A great read from a politician I admire, albeit I disagree with her on so many (largely economic) issues. The only women who treat their relationships as a hobby are vulnerable, unlike the men, who presumably have no context of their own.

What I liked most is the narrative that it’s okay to be who you are and you should go out there and give what ever it is your passionate about a shot. It was empowering to read that she feels just as threatened and insecure as the rest of us when walking into an event or standing up and speaking about something; she explains that when under threat, she tends to expand rather than contract (I tend to do this, too, my worst examples being when about to go under anaesthetic: oh, I blush!

Her experience working for a charity that helps women who have been victims of abuse has given her an insight into the worst that men can do to women. Taking in chapters on motherhood, starting work, equality, politics and trolling, and more, she speaks about her own experiences and then places them within the context of (mainly women’s) general experiences. She is a feminist who can articulate how equality should be a positive thing for men as well as women, someone who fights for families who refuses to value anyone by the number of children they have and a real humanitarian. The most famous of these being when she named all the deaths of women killed by domestic violence in Britain on International Woman’s Day.I feel fired up to make a difference, equipped with some brilliant counter-arguments and facts and ready to go make some changes in my community. Here, she talks about politicians being human and her tendency to put her foot in her mouth, but it doesn’t always feel as guileless as that.

From rather further to the right of the political spectrum, we can recommend Post-Truth: The New War on Truth and How to Fight Back by Matthew d'Ancona. Damian Barr’Everywoman has all the laughs [of Lena Dunham and Caitlin Moran] with a backbone of real glinting anger . For all the humour, Jess manages the delicate balancing act of weaving the personal into the political.Jess talks about her upbringing and the struggle of balancing having a family and maintaining her political career and she talks openly about the sacrifices she has had to make to continue doing her job. MLA style: "Everywoman: One Woman's Truth About Speaking the Truth by Labour MP Jess Phillips to be adapted for TV drama.
