Or does it have to do with a mysterious mirror, gifted to her upon her wedding and swirling with dark magic? Disney's New York Times best-selling Villains series comes to life in this graphic novel adaptation of the book that started it all in this tragic tale of love and loss, the untold story of Snow White's Wicked Queen. The queen’s and Snow White’s likenesses to Disney characters are evident; most characters read White.Fairest of All: A Villains Graphic Novel is the graphic novel version of the 2009 book, Fairest of All: A Tale of the Wicked Queen, written by Serena Valentino. Also, there was so much build-up, but once we reached the climax of the story (the part that most are familiar with based on the movie) everything sped up and it was over. Neither the Queen or Princess looked all too beautiful with the style and I just felt some details were but that was to be expected.

The evil stepmother in this retelling of “Snow White” starts life as a commoner who marries the king and becomes a loving mother to his little girl. It very much makes the story look as though the Queen's attempted murders are excusable, due to someone else's intervention and bending of her desires and motives. While I'm not sure if it's supposed to be "cannon," I do find it fascinating that Valentino has given the Stepmother a backstory and a reason for being as cruel as she was. The author does touch on the story of Snow White but keeps rest of the story told from the POV of the wicked stepmother. An interesting look at the possible backstory of Snow White’s stepmother, to see her from a different perspective.

Part of it was from the art style, I didn't really enjoy it and it often made the speech bubbles seem to be in the wrong spot. I was really excited for this graphic novel because I had loved the book so much, but I ended up disliking it more than I thought.I'm not saying the whole "bring me her heart" thing was above-board or anything, but the Queen probably did the world a favor in eliminating Snow (well, trying to eliminate her). They appear throughout the story, continually weaving their evil magic into the queen’s life and encouraging her to do horrible deeds. I love how the book explored themes such as grief, loss and childhood trauma as well as how they have shaped the Queen into who she is.

Because you are seeing someone who had good intentions from the start to be a mother and queen and who was happy in life and ends up falling into a deep dark spiral in life with ultimately their death.Disney Villains Fairest of All recounts a version of the story that many over the ages have viewed as plausible. This is pretty much an illustrated version of the Fairest of All book from the original series, but I didn’t mind one bit. I get what they were trying to portray by having black, white, and bright green but it didn't work for me, mostly in the beginning when the Queen was supposed to be the most kind, loving person ever. I was impressed with just how much was conveyed with such an limited (and unconventional) color palate.
