The Legion can be summed up with statements like “that man who is a plant and wants to remain financially solvent”, “the guy who looks like that Fantastic Four dude”, and “Lady Thor”. Inheriting the Dreadnought mantle pretty much guarantees Danny a spot at the cape table—when she turns eighteen. Just know that this is not a particularly happy trans coming out story (but not altogether depressing either! Danielle teams up with vigilante heroine Calamity to track down the previous Dreadnought’s murderer, only to stumble upon a plan to destroy the human race. But then in health class when the teacher starts talking about reproductive systems, I get this feeling of cold invasion.

On top of her hunt for Utopia, she juggles the new friction with her friend David who believes she’s his chance for a date, her abusive father’s mounting pressure to “fix” her body, and the reaction from Legion Pacifica when they learn the new Dreadnought is a trans girl. Greywytch’s immediate nasty commentary to a teenager that the Legion knows has just undergone a massive shock starts to undermine my suspension of disbelief. But before he expired, Dreadnought passed his mantle to her, and those second hand superpowers transformed Danny's body into what she's always thought it should. Charlie Jane Anders, author of All the Birds in the SkyDanny Tozer has a problem: she just inherited the powers of Dreadnought, the world's greatest superhero. The other members of the former Dreadnought's group - "Legion Pacifica" - think Danny is too young to take on the villains and save the world, but that just gets added to the long list of mistakes people make about her.

The pain, and the anger, and the way once again Danny has to restrain herself from letting it break to the surface now that she has so much strength. It should be the happiest time of her life, but Dannys first weeks finally living in a body that fits her are more difficult and complicated than she could have imagined.

The worldbuilding feels familiar in a sense, in that it's sort of 'standard superhero' fare, but that worked just fine for me. It’s important to remember that Danny is only fifteen, so a lot of the idiotic stuff that Danny and Calamity get up to is on point for their age. With a last glance around to check if I'm in the clear I duck out of the parking structure and head down the back side of the mall, toward the ramp that heads up to the elevated roadway running through the city's heart. Between her father’s dangerous obsession with “curing” her girlhood, her best friend suddenly acting like he’s entitled to date her, and her fellow superheroes arguing over her place in their ranks, Danny feels like she’s in over her head. However some of the reviews I’ve seen for it make me think it suffers from the same issues with generalizing and stereotypes. Gr 9 Up—While many teenagers have a challenging time dealing with school and peer pressure, for 15-year-old Danny Tozer, life is a little more complicated.
