Description

Sir Michael Edward Palin, KCMG, CBE, FRGS is an English comedian, actor, writer and television presenter best known for being one of the members of the comedy group Monty Python and for his travel documentaries. The house is warren-like, slightly haphazardly arranged; Palin explains that it’s two terraced houses merged into one. He has lived here with his wife, Helen, for more than 50 years. Upstairs, his study is large and bright and book-lined, slightly donnish with wooden shelves and the collected tchotchke of a long life. He’s a serious reader and spends a while discussing favourite novels.

Last year, Palin disclosed that his wife had moved into respite care after she failed to respond to pain medication.

Michael Palin has been travelling across the world for decades. These travels are best known from the television series for which these journeys are designed, but he also writes books to accompany them. wereldreiziger (en oerkomiek) Michael Palin naar Irak voor Channel 5 Television. As Palin heads south, though, he encounters more suspicion, more hesitancy and even outright hostility from the people he meets.

You just see this devastation and they are smiling," he says. "It’s quite something in the middle of all this. I was very moved." The Arts Theatre, Botanic Avenue, Belfast, birthplace of my first-ever one-man show. It doesn’t look much, but it meant a lot to me. The end of the railway bridge can beseen rising on the left. Noise from passing trains could kill a joke. It’s not there any more. And he considers the role that Iraq's other great natural resource - oil - plays in both providing wealth and threatening political stability. When I decided to publish them about eight or nine years ago, a wonderful lady called Kath was transcribing the diaries – as they were all handwritten – and every time she sent a new section over, my wife became interested and I’d read her bits. I’m really sorry it’s been so long since my last post, and for all those of you who still find time to read this stuff I should follow my apology with an explanation. The first couple of months of the year were spent in the great waiting room of life whilst the possibility of another travel series was being debated. In the meantime I spent thirty hours in a basement studio in Clerkenwell trying to stop my tummy rumbling as I recorded the unabridged version of my first volume of Diaries, The Python Years.Despite having to spend days at my desk, I do get out every now and then, and the other week I gave a reading at a carol service in support of one of my most valued charities - The National Churches Trust, which tries to raise money to keep our huge number of remarkably beautiful church buildings open and of use to the community. As a perk, two of my fellow supporters were two blokes I admire greatly - Hugh Dennis and Bill Bryson. In the diaries he has been publishing since 2006, Michael Palin reveals a vulnerable side in his habit of recording the compliments paid to him. It’s as if his confidence needs to be shored up by the praise of others. Well, he can another one to the list, because Michael Palin: Into Iraq (Channel 5) is a worthy addition to his long travelography.
