Description

The light was subjected to warm water submersion, followed by cold water submersion and left under room temperature running water tap whilst running on Turbo. NITECORE! The CRI for the Auxiliary White Light is said to be >90CRI but Nitecore did not disclose the tint (color temperature). A guesstimate would be in the 4000K ballpark.

BRIGHTNESS OUTPUTS

The Nitecore headlamp has a built-in micro USB charging circuit which provides fast and safe charging, which terminates automatically when complete. The micro USB port has a protective cap which shields it from damage. Please note, the rechargeable feature is only compatible when using a Li-ion 18650 battery. For this light, the spill, corona and hotspot is somewhat predictable due to the fairly shallow Smooth Reflector. But due to the main LED used, the beam is still sufficiently “throwy” for recognising items in the near to mid-range distance. Some pictures have been adjusted slightly to depict as close as to what is seen in real life. The distance of the light from the door is 4.6m. My measurements were pretty close to specs, and even above specs in most modes. Keep in mind that I measured them with an ND filter installed. Therefore, the difference between turn on and 30 seconds in Ultra-Low low seems big, but that’s actually just the lowest lux numbers the luxmeter can measure with that camera ND filter installed. So it’s like 1lux vs 2lux..

The blinking (~1.5 sec interval) BLUE indicator depicts charging in progress and BLUE indicator lit (non-blinking) depicts charging has completed. Switching ON and OFF is done by the electronic switch on the right side of the light, so no momentary activation is possible.

Included in the Box

High started at 962 lumens and slowly declined in output to 872 lumens at 10 minutes when it dropped rapidly till it reached about 550 lumens, and slowly increased to about 570 lumens. At the 2 hours-26minutes mark, it dropped to 255 lumens. And at 2 hours-34minutes it dropped even further, to 51 lumens. After 3 hours and 24 minutes, it dropped to 1 lumen. It continued running for many hours. (Specs: 2h 15min)

After the battery is installed and the cap is closed, the BLUE light indicator will blink out the current battery voltage. Alternatively, when charging the battery, 1/2 Press the switch and the BLUE light indicator will blink out the current battery voltage as well. The main beam has a rather distinct hotspot with some slight corona and a rather wide usable (almost circular) spill. It also helps that the XM-L2 led is perfectly centred in this sample. There is a slight ring in the main beam when whitewall hunting but is not visible in real world usage. All output numbers are relative to my homemade Integrating Sphere. It is set up with an Extech SDL400 Lux Meter for measurements including a Kenko PRO1D ND-16 filter. The base measurement is done with a Convoy S2+ that has been tested at 255 lumens. The NITECORE HC65 USB rechargeable headlamp adds even more power to the popular HC60 headlamp by adding secondary red & high CRI LEDs. Equipped with a primary CREE XM-L2 US LED, users will enjoy a 1000 lumen wide-angle output beam capable of a 120 yard throw useful for mid-range illumination activities like hiking, biking and camping. A high CRI auxiliary white light renders colors more like sunlight and can be used for an upclose flood of light when reading or working while an auxiliary red light helps users preserve night vision in dark environments. RED LEDs are generally poor in CRI as almost everything appears in different shades of red. They are generally used when retaining night vision is required and are excellent in that respect. A guesstimate wavelength would be 630nm. This light’s Auxiliary White Light (High CRI) and RED light are placed behind a frosted honeycomb-style diffuser lens which provide a soft and artifact-free beam profile for up-close to near range distance usage. You might confuse the product name with the Nitecore HC60 v2 we reviewed earlier, but this is a different kind of flashlight. The HC60 has only 1 LED, and not red or AUX LEDs like the HC65 V2. So the HC65 v2 looks like an ‘upgraded’ version of the HC60 with multiple LEDs and features.
