Description

Lowen is a struggling writer who gets the opportunity of a lifetime to co-write a series with acclaimed author, Verity Crawford. When she arrives at Verity's home to do some research, she comes across a disturbing autobiography revealing the truth about all the tragic events in her life. Should Lowen let Verity's "dreamy" husband, Jeremy, know wassup? Or just sex him instead? Find out!

As you can tell, I really enjoyed this dark and disturbing journey tale, despite every single character here being messed up. The one thing that didn’t make sense though was why Jeremy flips out when he re-reads that manuscript or why he wouldn’t mention to Lowen that he’d seen it before? Am I missing something here? Why does he bother pretending to read the manuscript instead of just saying that he’s already read it?

There are two things that kind of bothered me, but with me, storytelling is everything. And this book had it in spades.

And I know a lot of teens love CoHo books, but this is one book of hers that I don’t recommend to young readers. Verity Plot Summary My mother used to say that houses have a soul, and if that is true, the soul of Verity Crawford’s house is as dark as they come.” – Lowen, Chapter 4 by Colleen Hoover narrated by Vanessa Johansson & Amy Landon, set in the Vermont countryside, present day is it like a Mr Rochester thing? Because this book does seem constructed around Jane Eyre nods in many ways.

Synopsis

DeepDark Chocolate Torte Verity by Colleen Hoover is as deep and dark as this flourless chocolatecake….with lies spun as silkily as sugar. I don't want to say too much, but I thought it was excellent. Hoover expertly leads us on a winding trail of lies and manipulation. As the story is essentially Hoover - an author - writing about an author reading about another author, there's this constant sense that someone is lying to you-- but who is it? Now, that's not so easy to tell. Why read Verity when you can just pull out an Ouija board and summon a demon from hell? I'm sure it’ll have the same effect. I finished this book feeling completely sapped of life, as if I've been bleeding freely for the past few hours instead of simply reading. That ending. What the hell. If I could just shake my head to dissolve the memory of it, to disarrange it somehow, I would. Because of all the things I’d braced myself for, that was not it. Most people come to New York to be discovered. The rest of us come here to hide. ― Colleen Hoover, Verity Good and Evil Within Us All

But, what does Crew mean that her mother is talking to him? Why is Verity staring right into her eyes? How can the door be closed from outside, when Jeremy was with Lowen? How can a brain-dead woman stand above Lowen and watch while her husband is cheating on her? Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer on the brink of financial ruin when she accepts the job offer of a lifetime. Jeremy Crawford, husband of bestselling author Verity Crawford, has hired Lowen to complete the remaining books in a successful series his injured wife is unable to finish. When she arrives at her publisher’s office, she receives a rather unusual proposition from Jeremy Crawford, husband to Verity, a famous and successful author, now catatonic following a terrible accident. Lowen is to finish the last three books in a series written by Verity, with the pay being seventy-five thousand for each volume. Naturally, she accepts the offer, and goes to live at the large Crawford family home in Vermont.

For starters, I think the author made the right choice in limiting the amount of characters present in this novel to just a few main ones. This decision alone obviously made it easier to focus in much greater depth on the people present, to spend more time with them as readers, and as a result, become more invested in their fates and inner worlds.

What I’ve come to appreciate most about Colleen Hoover’s work—whether it’s an emotionally charged love story or in this case, her first go at suspense—is her penchant for pushing boundaries. For telling the unexpected story.Lowen decides to keep the manuscript hidden from Jeremy, knowing its contents could devastate the already grieving father.
