They studied art firstly at Hastings School of Art, then, following their parents' divorce in 1912 and the subsequent relocation of the girls and their father to Brixton, at Lambeth School of Art. She's not super special, but she finds pleasure in the simple things, and that makes it fun to read.

There is hope for a boy who has never read The Gruffaloor Come Away from the Water, Shirley – but what can you do with one who has listened to them a handful of times and then buggered off to his Tonka trucks and thinks that settles the matter? I definitely recommend these stories and plan to read them to my little girl when it's becoming time to move on from picture books. I would compare these stories to the Happy Little Family series in that they are gentle, simple stories about ordinary life. My memories of this book are mainly of when my mum read to me, and therefore I think this is a good book to share to children if you are a parent. Mr Rudge Mr Rudge is a blacksmith who Milly-Molly-Mandy invited to their party and then later in the last book he gets married and Milly-Molly-Mandy and Little Friend Susan are the bridesmaids. And the tiny children understand why the teacher needs to be strict even if she is staying at Milly-Molly-Mandy's house. Every Milly-Molly-Mandy story is a miniature masterpiece, as clear, warm and precise as the illustrations by the author that accompanied them. In one of my fave stories Milly-Molly-Mandy finds out that there's A MEAN GANG in her village so she and her friends start A KIND GANG, and soon the members of the other gang start to get bored of doing mean things and even join MMM's gang of kindness.

My 6 and 3 year old loved them more than I did; there isn’t much that happens but they were intrigued by how things were different in her world and I think the simplicity appealed to them. Milly-Molly-Mandy helps look for a name for her and decides on Primrose but Mrs Moggs had already named her Doris.

Jo had a peculiar sense of something that didn’t seem at all strange to me, so I applied to Dad and he explained that words can change their meanings over time. Unfortunately, there are only two types of suitable dressmaking material: one is Milly-Molly-Mandy's pink and white stripes and the other is a pattern of daisies and forget-me-nots. Each time she is sent anywhere as a treat, she spends her money on individual inexpensive gifts for the whole family. For every mother who desires to cultivate a lasting foundation of curiosity and wonder for her children from home, whilst continuing a rich life of learning for herself.

It's not often you see an afterword that remembers the child audience as much as the adult, and Macmillan are to be commended for this. Another reason why I like MMM is that, to modern eyes, the children were all quite mature and independent, probably more so than kids these days - MMM was obviously quite young, but she did chores and ran errands and was thoughful about other people; she had many good qualities but was painted as a normal child rather than someone who was particularly virtuous (phew). And more telling still are the many ways the children find to fill the time while waiting for the big event -- the snow, the party, the day at sea. This collection of short stories follows a young girl Millicent Margaret Amanda (shortened to Milly-Molly-Mandy) who lives in a small tightly knit community village, complete with map in the front cover. Thoroughly enjoyed my short journey with Edwards, and will definitely try it with my son (currently 4) before long.Content surprises are super annoying, especially when you’re 100+ pages in, so here’s my attempt to help you avoid that! I find British authors from the early and mid-1900's did a fantastic job of making stories of everyday happenings enjoyable to read. The story “Milly-Molly-Mandy Spends a Penny” has lived rent-free in my brain for weeks now and it’s not being evicted anytime soon. First edition thus second printing Boxed set of four books hardback Illustrated by the author Fine condition in Fine slipcase.
