That doesn’t deny the fact that I have a fuckload of tattoos all over my body, and it’s the same with music. A decade on from her first X Factor audition Lucy releases new album alongside her forthcoming memoir. She’s a sense of humour too eulogising the city where she lives in Manchester with its ‘sticky’ dancefloors and ‘it might look grey coming out the station but you’ll see rainbows everywhere. Last but certainly not least is ‘ Cost of Living’ – a melodious track that features a combination of vocals and spoken word from Lucy, as she runs through the shared experience of being a human being in the 21st century.

Everything I’ve done since and all the music I release is an observation of how I am now and my life in that moment. I can read the story of my life and listen to the music I was producing at the time, they really do sit side by side, and definitely, the later parts of the book represent who I am now. When Spraggan released opening track Everything Changeslast year incorporating her X Factor hit Beer Fear it wasn’t quite clear what she was referring to when she sang: ‘I think of things that happened 10 years ago and I feel much better letting them go. Because if more people bought your album that week than they did a different album, you are literally rated out of ten for that. It’s rare for me to comment in music on something that I’m not directly involved in,” Spraggan explains carefully. What is more, writing the book has put a renewed spotlight on how different it is to put music to words and come up with melodies to describe feelings. Products shown, tagged or featured on YouTube by creators are sold by merchants and are subject to merchant's terms and conditions. And I feel deep down that everyone has a song in them, my environment just enabled me to actually create it. Laced with the honesty and authenticity that sets her work aside from that of other artists, Balance is definitely a record that she should be proud of.

And while she’s certainly been busy writing both a memoir and an album, she’s also happy to remain busy for the foreseeable future with touring her new music. It’s something [the working diagnosis] I’ve come away from, and I’m looking into all the other traits that I have. Lucy was the first contestant in X Factor history to score a top 40 single and album before the live shows aired. In drawing on the process of putting pen to paper and writing her memoirs, Lucy not only celebrates the highs and lows of the past decade on an album that cuts to the core of her experience to date, but delivers her strongest, most finely crafted work of her career so far. A hauntingly beautiful tribute to Lucy’s late friend, Caroline Flack, ‘Caroline’ addresses the scrutiny that comes with life in the public eye. Perhaps these songs are what help other people find their balance or the fact that Spraggan is openly talking about her own mental health struggles and more recently, her experience with sexual assault. I’m 32 in a couple of weeks, I don’t think that’s old, but I’m older than I was when I was writing songs at 12.
