Vlado Meller has faced criticism for his mastering, clipping albums such as Kanye West’s My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, The White Stripes’ Icky Thump, and The Mars Volta’s Deloused in the Comatorium. The production on Californication is far more basic and straightforward though, so creating relentless distortion through compression or clipping doesn’t really fit, in my opinion. It is still a great song to crack out at a barbeque or a garden party, and is divinely beautiful to my ears. seen as a well-earned second wind at the time of release, i rly feel that californication stands as this band’s definitive statement. ykno, as much as ppl like to peg rhcp as this meathead, npc typa radio band, i just can’t help but see this record as strikingly beautiful.Besides, given their success with "Under the Bridge" and "My Friends" it was clear their audience was ready for a more restrained sound and more pensive mood from the band.
