MILLION DISTILLERY EXPANSION SIGNALS THE GLENLIVET'S BID FOR GLOBAL LEADERSHIP IN SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY" . Retrieved 5 June 2010. Today, the distillery is a major stop on the Scotland's Malt Whisky Trail of seven working Speyside single malt distilleries in the Strathspey, Scotland region. During the Glenlivet tour (after paying a fee), visitors can sample three of the products. [19] The Glenlivet Distiller's Reserve is part of the new Triple Cask range of single malts, which are exclusive to the travel retail sector. It is a rebranding of the previous Master Distiller's Reserve release. The other two whiskies in the range are the White Oak Reserve (which replaces the Solera Vatted) and the Rare Cask (which is a re-naming of the Small Batch). As the name suggests, three casks have been used for maturation for each bottling. In the case of the Distiller's Reserve these are first-fill American white oak, European oak and ex-sherry casks used in combination. The finish is sweet with that late peppery warmth. The pear and apple notes fade, followed by the sweetness. A nuttiness - imagine hazelnut especially - develops to accentuate the earthy and warming baking spices, which combine to drag out the otherwise short finish. Finish: relatively short, with barley grain lingering, and just a hint of spirity bitterness on the tail end.

This series is exclusively sold on the travel retail market and is well worth a trip to any airport to buy. Each of the malts has been matured in Sherry, Bourbon and European oak casks, to varying degrees. George Smith died in 1871 and his son John Gordon Smith inherited the distillery. The quality of the product from their distillery had resulted in the other distilleries in the area renaming their products to "Glenlivet" and by the time of George's death, several distillers were doing so. J.G. Smith decided to take legal action and tried to claim ownership on The Glenlivet name, this legal action was only partially successful - the verdict forced other distillers in the area to stop calling their whisky Glenlivet and gave J.G. Smith and the blender Andrew Usher sole permission to use the brand, but permitted other distilleries to hyphenate their distillery name with the "Glenlivet" name, which resulted in new distillery names such as The Glen Moray-Glenlivet Distillery, a distillery which is situated nearby. The Glenlivet distillery is a distillery near Ballindalloch in Moray, Scotland that produces single malt Scotch whisky. It is the oldest legal distillery in Scotland. It was founded in 1824 and has operated almost continuously since. [1] The distillery remained open throughout the Great Depression and its only closure came during World War II. The Glenlivet distillery has grown in the post-war period to become one of the biggest single malt distilleries. The Glenlivet brand is the biggest selling single malt whisky in the United States and the second biggest selling single malt brand globally [2] after Glenfiddich. The colour is golden yellow and the nose is full of crisp green pear and apple aromas. These are complimented by further aromas of fudge, heather honey and butterscotch. Underneath are hints of earthy baking spices with cinnamon to the fore.

Bottling of The Glenlivet took place at a Chivas Brothers bottling plant at Newbridge just outside Edinburgh, [6] but that plant was sold at the end of 2009 with bottling to be transferred to other Chivas Brothers plants. [9] We take great pride in setting the standard that all other Speyside single malts are measured by and our dedicated distillery collection is the culmination of our 200 years of experience. These exclusive bottles are usually only available directly from our distillery gift shop but are now available for delivery to your doorstep. Each of these unique expressions captures The Glenlivet’s signature style and the spirit of the glen itself. Indulging in a distinctive drop from the comfort of your own home is the next best thing to a visit to our home in Speyside. My tasting of this wasn’t done in ideal conditions, as I tasted it (two 50ml samples) from a plastic cup on a flight from Toronto to Edmonton. Illicit distilleries were commonplace throughout the Speyside area from 1700s but were largely made redundant with the passing of the Excise Act in 1823. [12] It was under this legislation that legal distilleries could be formed, subject to holding a license. Alexander Gordon, 4th Duke of Gordon, was allegedly instrumental in the passing of this legislation. Although there is no historical record of his involvement in the issue, his tenant, George Smith, who was operating an illicit distillery on his Upper Drummin farm at the time, became the first person in Scotland to apply for and receive a license to legally produce spirit. The Glenlivet is the best selling malt whisky in the United States, and the fourth best selling in the UK with a 7% market share. The Glenlivet is the world's second best selling single malt whisky, and current global sales total 6 million bottles per annum. [2] The Malt Whisky Trail Map

Spending time in the Solera Vat is what gives this expression in the signature The Glenlivet Master Distiller’s Reserve range its truly exceptional character. Alan Winchester, our Master Distiller, first triple cask matures the spirit in traditional oak, American first-fill and ex-sherry casks. He then selects the best of these casks to transfer to the Solera Vat. The vat, which is never emptied, creates a rich whisky that develops in intensity and complexity every year.” a b c d e f g h i Pacult, F. Paul (2005). On the palate this whisky is immediately soft and fudge-like with further overtones of toffee and chewy caramel sweets. These sweet notes combine well with the green fruit from the nose, although the apple and pear now feel more stewed or cooked rather than fresh and crisp. Further notes of heather honey and golden syrup add some depth, along with hints of vanilla and sultana. Warming baking spices then begin to impose themselves - think of cinnamon, all-spice and clove in particular. Late hits of white pepper and candied orange peel round things off.
