Description

The Indian was so well integrated in his environment that his motivation was almost hidden; his lifeway was as mysterious to white men as the wolf’s. In the Northwest Territories it may reach seventy degrees below zero or climb to ninety degrees on a summer day.

The wolves that remain in North America today are often distinguished simply as tundra or timber (or gray) wolves, according to where they live. Ian MacTaggart Cowan, another Canadian, thinks that the last specimens of northern Rocky Mountain wolf bred with the Mackenzie Valley wolf to finally eliminate all vestiges of that race. At the end of that section, I wasn’t any closer to understanding why they killed wolves the way they did and in such huge numbers. It is females, moreover, who decide where to den and thus where the pack will have to hunt for five or six weeks. The wolf seems to have few relationships with other animals that could be termed purely social, though he apparently takes pleasure in the company of ravens. Mr Lopez takes as his starting point, ‘ man’s struggle to come to grips with the nature of the universe. In the days to follow, they will meet another wolf from the pack, a second female, younger by a year, and the three of them will kill a caribou.

From the descriptions of the “conversation of death,” as Lopez describes several encounters between wolves and prey that do not fit expected patterns—and how domestic prey animals like sheep and cattle have had this conversation bred out of them—I begin to understand more of this relationship. The most gruesome were the “brave hunters” who would shoot machine guns from an airplane to kill hundreds of alaskan wolves per day. Vivid images can be found abundantly throughout the novel and helps to portray scenes to the point where the audience can actually imagine, smell, touch, and hear everything that is going on. As Americans, we do this quite frequently, when we think of a certain event or social gathering we are planning on attending or even being forced to attend, we draw up and image within our minds. But as it turns real—real skin, real cleavage, perhaps not-so-real blond hair—their faces slowly light up.

In southern Canada and Minnesota the black phase is more common than the white, but grays predominate. Philologists argue about the origin of the name but it seems probable that the building was once used as a place of worship for Apollo, the Wolf Slayer. Wolves vary their hunting techniques, share food with the old who do not hunt, and give gifts to each other. Animal Kingdom Of Wolves and Men is not only the best popular account of an animal I have read in a long time, but also something new — a bridge between books of the past and those of the future, which, it is hoped, will incorporate and expand the perceptions so eloquently treated here.
