Finally, we use a Datacolor SpyderX Elite calibrator to measure the display's color coverage (in three popular gamuts or color spaces) and brightness. The question is, is this just greenwash or is it a genuine step-change in recycling and production methods? And like Acer’s better budget and mid-range plastic laptops, the casing flex is not excessive — just a little if you press down fairly hard on the keyboard. The entry-level configuration is nothing to scoff at either, as it makes use of a Core i5 processor.

I’m pretty much a touch typist so don’t glance at the keys with any great frequency, but I still find it distracting. This could explain why, despite the identical storage capacity, the VAIO SX14 outperforms it thanks to its PCI Express Gen 4 SSD, which allows for higher transfer speeds. Acer has squished these keys horizontally a little, which is a great move as it means the primary keys are not shunted to the left too much. That’s enough to get you through a whole day of use, but expect that figure to drop by a couple of hours if you ramp up the screen brightness. That’s ample pace for any everyday task – whether you want to open all of your Office apps, loads of browser tabs or a basic photo-editing tool. But these attributes, cute as they are, aren’t enough to make me recommend the Aspire Vero on the merit of its environmental impact.

A 512GB SSD also offers plenty of space for all your documents, media and files without compromising on performance. This can lower the carbon footprint of its manufacture and offers a way to use some of the plastic waste we’re frequently told ends up in places where you hope it wouldn’t be. Even with Battery Saver on, I was averaging four hours and 52 minutes of continuous work to one charge. While it may not be much greener than the original, it offers better performance across the board, keeping competitive with other consumer laptops. There are also two tiny yellow feet on the display hinge, and they swing down when you open the display to prop up the back edge of the laptop to further aid airflow and create a slight angle to improve your typing experience. VeroSense's focus is on energy efficiency and smartly contributing to keeping your laptop running longer with its four performance modes: performance, balanced, eco, and Eco+.

On our 3D graphics benchmark, the Aspire Vero again finished second but this time behind the MSI Prestige. The chassis is totally paint-free, another environmentally-friendly measure meant to lower the amount of potentially harmful volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, released into the air. To be fair, that’s probably as far as it can really go when so many of the core components are bought in from suppliers like Intel and Kensington. That’s a good specification for hammering through everyday tasks, and you’ll only find more experimental displays with taller aspect ratios or higher resolutions if you spend more. Its casing is 30% PCR, the rest presumably ‘virgin’ plastics that give Acer more control over the strength of the plastic and its finish.I rather like this and I suspect that, being unpainted, it will stay looking good for longer than a more conventional finish. This laptop is a pretty good advert for using what are often considered compromised plastics because the Aspire Vero is actually one of Acer’s better-looking laptops. Of course, the somewhat non-unique nature of its lofty claims hasn’t stopped Acer from branding the Vero as an eco-minded laptop up and down. Some HP laptops already use more recycled material than the Acer, and Apple’s pricier MacBook Pro notebooks have been using 100% recycled aluminum since 2018. The i5-1155G7 in the cheaper model isn’t much different, with the same core count but slower speeds.
