Description

Even when you’re using a diffused flash, the light often is dominantly coming from above. So, the undersides of macro photography subjects may still be in shadow. It’s usually not a good look. For this reason, I always carry along a small reflector to help bounce the light from below. Almost anything reflective and white can be utilized as a reflector, and you can easily build your own. 2. Avoid Flare You will get much better lighting if you get the flash off-camera. You can use a remote TTL cable, but I prefer radio wireless control (depends on your flash model). I've used Phottix Odin triggers for many years. Flexibility: These diffusers will work with almost any lens and camera and always be as lose to the subject as possible because they attach directly to the lens. For the same reason they are limited to on-camera use however. The downside is that lenses, that focus by rotating the front-element, will change the orientation of the diffuser.

DIY diffusers range from the simple use of paper towels / kitchen roll, to self-made little softboxes or pringles cans, used as a light tube. Foldable Portable Softbox 2Pcs Flash Diffuser, Camera Lens Diffuser Reflector, Flash Lens Diffuser Reflector with Storage Bags for Studio Photography Camera Lens Accessories (White)

Note on top of the diffuser is a white piece of plastic. This can be removed and placed below the lens to produce some fill light (ingenious).

If you ask me, the diffuser is probably the most important ingredient for macro photography with flash. are the perfect material to build macro diffusers from; stable tubes with a reflective inside and the ideal diameter to fit on almost any speedlight.

There is an incredible amount of different flash modifiers available on the market. Some work well, others don’t, and some are simply not meant for macro photography. By designing them to suit your own needs and expectations they will be more effective than a generic softbox or a shoot-through diffuser. Of course not all store-bought diffusers are bad, indeed some of them work really well and most of them don’t cost much more than the material for a DIY project would.

Not a world different to tissue paper but tends to be thinner so you might need to use a few more layers. Tissue paper is usually larger so easily to make a single diffuser out of - loo paper tends to come apart at the seams which is a tad annoying. Very warm tone.

As the name suggests, moldable plastic is user-shapable plastic. It is sold in bead form, usually by weight. You really don't need mountains of the stuff. I have 500g and I should imagine I can make at least 5+ thin a4 diffuser sheets with this if I really really wanted to. All you do is heat up a pan of water and drop it in, the beads then melt, go clear and join together in the pan, you take out the putty-like mass and it can then be shaped and reshaped as you wish whilst warm. When cooled down, the material is completely rigid, white and semi-opaque, very much like a kitchen cutting board. But if thin enough it is much like a diffuser material with the advantage that it is not only rigid and lasts, but more importantly can be made into any curved or rounded diffuser surface shape - ie no more limitation of using just a flat paper plane. You can then make it fit any unique diffuser housing shape you wish - epic example here - and actually come to think of it you could also surely use it to even make the housing itself, ie dye it. Of course you can cut away and use plastic milk containers or other white plastic bottles if you need a round diffuser surface shape like has already been done for years, but it seems to me this material takes things further and allows us tinkerers total flexibility over all aspects of the shape.
