To measure the waterproofness of a material, companies stretch their fabric flat. On top, they place a column of water, one inch in diameter, and keep adding water until it soaks through the fabric. If a fabric has a hydrostatic head of 3000mm, it means the fabric can hold a column of water three metres high and one inch in diameter before leaking.
