With Mezzanine , however, the party had ended; revisiting the murky soundscapes so favoured by former partner and fellow Bristolian Tricky , the comeback single "Rising Son" muttering edgily about "cheap beer filled with crocodile tears", over the deepest bass. All-time classics such as "Unfinished Sympathy", "Safe From Harm" and "Hymn of the Big Wheel" have lost none of their soulful, mood-enhancing brilliance, while lesser celebrated cuts such as "Five Man Army" and "Lately" still sound great despite their vintage. I actually missed out on the earlier releases, because I was too deep into hip-hop in the early nineties and I did not consider massive attack's sound to be hip-hop enough! Some mechanical issues; Side "A" groove is slightly off center, not causing audible issues, but frustrating.

Review: By the time they headed into the studio to record Protection, Massive Attack were still riding high on the success of their peerless debut album, Blue Lines. That time came in 1995, when British sound system legend Mad Professor - responsible for some of the greatest UK-made dub records of all time - put his distinctive twist on Protection. All 8 of the Mad Professor remixes included here are previously unreleased and include his dub mixes of 2 tracks not originally featured on Mezzanine but from the same period; “Metal Banshee”, a dub version of ‘Superpredators’ which was a cover of Siouxie and the Banshee’s ‘Metal Postcard’, and “Wire”, a track they recorded for the soundtrack of the film Welcome to Sarajevo. Currently playing on my Thorens TD 160 with Nagaoka MP-110 feeding my Yamaha CA-800 which powers a pair of first generation Klipsch Heresy. Originally released in 1998 and now widely hailed as Massive Attack‘s masterpiece – and voted 15th in Q Magazine’s 100 Greatest British Albums Ever (2000) – Mezzanine saw the band move away from the trip-hop sound they had helped define to embrace rock and electronica.

Bristol's original trip-hop pioneers had, on previous albums Blue Lines and Protection , fused turntable wizardry to the warmest of soul. Can’t make my mind up if CD sounds better than the vinyl so it must be close, sounds great on either. A DVD-audio or any of the others would put that to rest, while giving us that sweet, crispy, dynamic range.

Like his take on "No Protection", it's an inspired set of revisions that takes 3D and Daddy G's dense and red-eyed originals into wild new bass-heavy places. Bristol's original trip-hop pioneers had, on previous albums Blue Lines and Protection, fused turntable wizardry to the warmest of soul. But I bought this one in late July of the year 2023 and received an amazingly good sounding set of records that aren't cut too loud but still using the space of one disc's side for two to three tunes, making them sound like a 12" 45.The Mad Professor remixes were originally intended to be released on a Mad Professor Mezzanine remix album – as the band had done with previous album Protection (No Protection) – yet in the end only a number of his remixes were issued as single B-sides. It's very apparent on "Dissolved Girl," as soon as the vocals come in with "shame, s*s*such a shame". After numerous bootlegs over the years, Virgin have done the right thing and presented this official reissue of Mezzanine to appease fans of Massive Attack and it's clear the LP has lost none of it's bewitching power. We don’t share your credit card details with third-party sellers, and we don’t sell your information to others. It's packed with highlights, from the spaced-out, dub-house rework of "Spying Glass" ("I Spy"), to the ricocheting percussion hits and twinkling pianos of "Weather Storm (Cool Monsoon)", and creepy, delay-laden string surges of "Eternal Feedback (Sly)".
